Senate Suspends Earmark Spending for Two Years

senate appropriations

The man in charge of doling out federal dollars in the Senate, Appropriations Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, announced Tuesday that his committee will implement a moratorium on earmarks for the next two fiscal years.

House Republicans swore off earmarks as part of their rules package after taking back the majority. GOPers in the Senate also vowed to abstain from the practice. On the Democratic side of the ledger, President Obama told Congress during his State of the Union address that he would veto bills that contain earmarks.

Those actions, Inouye said in a statement, forced the appropriator’s hand, “Given the reality before us, it makes no sense to accept earmark requests that have no chance of being enacted into law.”

It is a stunning reversal for a man who has long prided himself on his ability to bring money back to his home state. According to government tracking site Legistorm, Sen. Inouye sponsored over $2.7 billion in earmarks between fiscal years 2008 and 2010.

Only two years? How about forever!

    • Sam

VOTE against all those who favored retaining earmarks.

    • Dee

obama said he would veto any bill that contains earmarks for 2 years. He has lied to us so much. Can we really believe he will do this.

    • EddieW

Oh la dee dah…2 whole years…then they can sneak it back in without fanfare, and the dummies will be no wiser!! We honestly really need to clean house in the Senate…and I mean get rid of Dems and Progressives…they both against any morality and freedoms!! So Sad that you can serve one term in the senate, and retire for life at full pay!! They really put the screws to the taxpayer, and betrayed us all!!!!

  • EUGENE

I think Earmarks and the such that is brought up by someone should go on the ballet at designated elections, so the people can decide whether we spend $500,000.00 on a study as to why frogs are green…or such other stupid things as that…

  • Mutantone

It is the only way they can stay in office by keeping the earmarks flowing this will end soon if they just look at the budget we can not afford their graft

    • anthony san diego

If Congress doesn’t spend the money it goes to the Executive branch. How do you think Obama will spend the money?

    • Arnold

What money? We are running $1.7 Trillion in the hole.

    • 57girl

While they are cutting things out… they should de-fund all of Obama’s Czars. I can see a whole lot of problems with our economy in addition to the earmarks that should be wiped out. How about cutting funding for Construction and renovation of all of those Mosques worldwide … and so on. Earmarks are just the tip of the iceberg.

  • Bob

This is a scam – there is no way the incumbents are going to give away the ability to use tax dollars to make their seats safe. They will just come up with another way to steal our money.

    • Sam

Surely you don’t think our honorable representatives and Senators who gave us ObamaCare would do such a thing!

  • http://MSN don

Eugene: I agree with you. It is time to stop all this payback for votes that has been going on for years. No one pays me a thing to vote, it is a privileged to vote. Only by doing it without the payback will we get honesty. Too many stupid things are bought by politicians for friends that they feel they owe. Honesty is the best thing in the world, and will get you all the votes you deserve.

    • Sam Bane

Keep a politician honest ??? There is absolutely no such thing as a honest politician. Sending a honest man to washington is like sending a man to prison. If he is not a criminal when he goes in he sure will be when he comes out. Comparing politicians to criminals may not be as far fetched as you may think. As an example, dig into the finanes of the Clintons. When slick willy went into office he was tremendously in debt. Now he and his are quite will off and live the life of kings. How about Charlie Rangel or Barney Frank. Joe Biden did not have a pot to pi$$ in or a window to throw it out of and now he is a millionair several times over. Harry Ried was a very unsuccessful boxer. Now he is amoung the wealthest people in Nevada. If you or I stole a fraction of what these people do we would be incarcerated for a long time. Hell, you have to look no further than to see what obama and his group have stolen just to take vacations. They are like country hogs eating city slop. He manages to steal millions and does not need an earmark. How about how much Nancy Pelosi stole in just air transportation. Over two and a half million just last year. Honest politicians ????????? There are none, but we must correct this system. Simple to do. Take them off the federal payrolls. They are elected by the populace of their respective states which should make them state employees, not elgible to take a single cent from the federal government. Put them on the state payrolls and we can control them.

  • Am2sweet

I think the earmarks should be outlawed forever. They stuck so many extra things in every bill that there wasn’t enough money to cover the bill. So, they dip into our social security savings and anything else they can to make up the difference. That is cheating the public and most people go to jail for that.

  • http://patriotupdate Tee

I say vote these idiots out of office so they can…. NEVER…implemnt another earmark ever…not just for two years.

STOP SPENDING YOU IDIOTS……that makes more sense….I bet if they had a business they would stop spending more than they take in..

    • Arnold

That is part of the problem, most of these people have never been in business much less held a real (non-lawyer) job.

  • jb80538

Each bill should be for only one thing! Do not even think of hiding even non spending legislation in other bills…

Like what I’ve been hearing about putting a large capacity gun magazine ban in the FAA bill of some sort.

    • Sandra

You are correct, that’s what they are doing.

  • http://aol.com sean murrey

how about doing away with it forever.

  • Joseph C Moore, USN Ret

No earmarks, no riders. Single item bills that are put to the people two weeks before being voted on.

    • Sam

That means they would have to work more than 3 days a week! How can you expect that from people who are only paid $75,000 per year and have to sleep in their own offces rent free!

    • Sam

      Sorry, $175,000 per year.

  • American with a birth certificate….

I know Americans are very trusting and very gullible. We want so badly to believe that our elected officals we vote for can be trusted. Now the truth,We have been soldout….Hello America,Can you say SOLDOUT???????? Our elected officals have offshore bank accounts and those accounts are being filled up by special interest groups and campaign contributers like soros ect and instead of earmarks they will be uncontested government contracts or something like that. What we need to do is audit all government spending and see where our tax dollars really go… Rahm will be the next mayor of corrupt go(CHICAGO) as daly takes his place in the white house and obama moves his headquarters back to his safe haven(CHICAGO). Hello America, This is being done right in your face. Hello America, did you hear me? This is being done right in our face and obama and rahm are saying to us,What will you try to do about it?The republicans have sold us out also… How come not even one republican will force obama to show his birth certificate? Answer is… They all have offshore bank accounts(OUT OF AMERICA)that are being filled up by corrupt campaign contributers and special interest groups and we need to monitor that. If it is a felony for anyone to lie to congress then it should be a felony for congress to lie to the American people. Lets make our leaders go by the same laws and rules they have the rest of us on,you know, the ones who voted them into office…

    • Marlene, Deer Park, WA

YOUR COMMENT GAVE ME A THOUGHT – IF OBUMMER MOVES HIS OFFICE TO CHICAGO, HE’LL BE VACATING THE wHITE hOUSE. DOES THIS MEAN WE CAN SAFELY ASSUME HE’S ALSO VACATED THE PRSIDENCY AND WE NO LONGER HAVE TO ACCEPT EVEN ONE OF HIS DECISIONS. HMMM….NICE THOUGHT THAT HE’D CUT HIS OWN NOSE OFF TO SPITE HIS FACE. I’VE HEARD RUMORS THAT HE WANTS TO MOVE HIS BASE OF OPERATIONS TO CHICAGO TO RUN HIS RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN. IN MY MIND, THE PRESIDENT RUNS THIS COUNTRY FROM THE WHITE HOUSE, AND IF HE MOVES ALL OPERATIONS FROM THAT SITE, HE’S OPTING OUT OF HIS JOB.

  • frank marks

no ear marks how dd this lie get started that congressmen havto get fed dollars spent in their own states usually to those who gave campaign contribrutions.. all congress man need to do is look out for the welfare of our country, the great and total usa, in so doing to express what values and opinions their states have.. if there are special sending projects needed in any state let it up to the states to evaluate and authorize them.. keep spending local to the states.. no more earmarks to get votes for or used as bribes or payoffs. one bill one item. keep it simple so all americans can understand

  • http://mozilla Robert E. Lee

I guess that is after he signed the stimulus with 9,000 earmarks, yes?

  • http://mozilla Robert E. Lee

I voted for it before I voted against it;; sic john kerry.

  • Bobcat

cut big government, and return control to the individual states, NO EARMARKS

  • Ken

I believe no bill should be submitted that is longer than 5 pages in at least a 14 font. It should be debated till exhaustion of conflicting ideas and then voted on, if after all the debate, still makes sense. This might slow our legislators down to the point where they are not encroaching on our freedoms at the speed of light.

  • armny

Obama redefined ‘stimulus’ as ‘investment’. The slimeballs in Congress will just redefine ‘earmarks’ as something else. Addicts have to have their (money) fixes!

  • Ryan

If something cannot stand on its own then it should not be submitted at all.

  • Will

When the people decide they have had enough they will demand an accounting of every dollar spent by the Government on any bill passed, it is easy to spend peoples money who do not care how it is spent, but its hard to spend peoples money when they want to know where it is going, NOW, EVERY BUILDING IN WASHINGTON D.C. BELONG TO (WE THE PEOPLOE), why not charge Obama, Congress and Senate a monthly fee to use them, this would be held in an account to cover loses and to HELP THEM out of their jobs WHEN THEY FAIL, every elected official sent to Washington is sent there to do the will of the people, pass laws in open sessions that are for the good of our nation, they work for us, we pay their saleries, they should be covered by same insurence and retirtement plans as any other American. you put a briddle on a horse because you want it to go where you want it to go,MAYBE WE SHOULD BRIDDLE ALL ELECTED OFFFICIALS, help them remain on the right track– THIS IS CALLED THE POWER OF OUR VOTES.aLL WE NEED TO REMEMBER IS HOW THEY DO WHEN ELECTIONS COME UP, if they fail, send them packing

  • Paul

Earmarks or “PORK” as it was called for years should be illegal, and any president who signes a bill with “Pork barrel money” should be inpeached. In Obama’s Stimulus contained over 8,000 Prk Barrel projects for a cost of over 8 billion dollars. Good job BIG O and not 1 job created,he was to concerned with getting his name on an illegal health care bill. do we really have to wait 2 years to get rid of this “LIBTARD”

  • Sam

A lot of those earmarks came from our “conservative” republicans.

  • ricbee

He’s punishing the newly elected Reps. But it’s worth it.

  • Yellow Horse

GOSH!!! Two whole years!!! Well Woopie Shit!! This just makes me feel Proud to be and idiot American, because the senate in their infinante wisdom has done such a swell job of holding off PORK BARREL SPENDING For two whole years. If this crap isn’t changed they will tripple or more in in the third year. Of course us idiot americans can’t figure that one out!! Everyone please get on your knees and praise the left wing demos.!!

  • diverjimk

I don’t mind the kind of earmarks that spend money to build something such as a Post Office in some Congressman’s district. Was really gets me is attaching Policy change amendments on some “must pass” legislation. Cash earmarks amount to less than 1% of the budget but Policy change earmarks can cause trouble for eternity!

  • rambo

THEY WANT TO GIVE OUT MONEY TO EVERY PROJECT EXCEPT TO HELP THE POOR PEOPLE ON S.S.,THERE WAS NO RAISE LAST YEAR AND WILL BE NONE FOR NEXT TWO YEARS– THE GOV. SAYS THAT THE COST OF LIVING HASN’T GONE UP, YET THEY GIVE THEMSELVES A 10,000 DOLLAR A YEAR RAISE, WHAT A BUNCH OF HYPOCRITS WE HAVE REPRESENTING US–WHEN YOU GET OLD, THEY WANT TO PUT YOU OUT TO PASTURE AND FORGET ABOUT YOU–JUST REMEMBER ALL YOU YOUNG PEOPLE, IF YOU LIVE LONG ENOUGH, YOU WILL BE OLD ONE DAY YOURSELF–PLEASE DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE OLDER PEOPLE WHO ONCE FOUGHT AND DIED FOR THIS COUNTRY SO THAT YOU COULD LIVE IN FREEDOM AND THE BEST COUNTRY ON THE PLANET..

    • Ken

In case you were unaware, the s.s. cost of living raises you’re not getting was immediately invested in state-of-the-art electronic health care management for our trusted political servants. So, they spent money they do not contribute to in order to keep track of their exceptional health care for life. Just remember they keep saying everyone is suffering right now. They don’t include the but us part.

  • DaNangMe

A suspension suggests that earmarks will be acceptable later on down the road. However if we vote this team out,and correctly program the replacements,it could lead to permanent cuts.I also think that attendance should be closely monitored just like any other job with penalties for missing too much time in session. Also pensions should be awarded with seniority like any other job. Full pension for one termers is ludicrous.

  • liberty59

Wow…they gave the American People two whole years without earmarks…I am so excited I could just SCREAM! If this spending doesn’t stop, and I mean truly STOP, there will be no AMERICA!

  • J. C. in Sc

Since earmarks amount to embezzling public funds (using tax dollars to buy a re-election), those who do it should be charged as the criminals they really are. If states need more money, then the solution is to take less money from them. There would be more total money available because the federal bureaucratic cost of handling the money would disappear.

  • kinnynobo

Two thoughts…First, any bets on how long before the first earmark makes it through and second, two years is fine as conservatives will take over in 2012 and eliminate earmarks.

  • Gazzzmann

A conservative President should use the “line item veto” that was put in years ago but to my knowledge never used.Good bills can get passed, but if there is pork the president can pass the bill at the same time line Item veto the pork

  • viva

I think there should be a moratorium on all of Congress’ salaries. No more increase in pay as long as the unemployment is high! Notice how the left screams about helping the rich? Well most Senators are millionaires! Maybe that should get more publicity! Go to: http://www.majorityleader.gov/YouCut/
and you CAN VOTE for what you think should be cut!
