Daniels Out, Cain In for White House Run

The race for the Republican presidential nomination gained some long-awaited clarity Sunday when Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels ended months of speculation with an early-morning email alerting supporters that he won’t run.

The Daniels decision to skip a White House bid has turned the attention of uncommitted Republican donors and activists to those candidates who actually are in the race, including former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who announced his candidacy in a video Sunday night and plans a speech on Monday.

But Mr. Daniels’ announcement also immediately increased the clamoring in some GOP quarters for other candidates to enter the race. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Alaska governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin are all being urged by various GOP factions to run, though the prospects of any of them choosing to do so didn’t appear strong.

Still, the decisions to decline to run by a whole group of high-profile potential candidates—including former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, businessman Donald Trump, Rep. Mike Pence and Sen. John Thune—have left many Republicans thinking another shoe is yet to drop, but not having a good sense of what it might be.

Eric Woolson, a strategist for Mr. Pawlenty, said the Daniels withdrawal won’t end speculation about other candidates, because some activists who were pressing Mr. Daniels to join the race would move on to other targets.

But, he added, “it is getting very late in the process” for new prospects to jump in. Many of those activists will take a second look—”or even a first look”—at the existing candidates and realize the field is stronger than believed, he said. That field is heavy with former governors, a proven formula for a strong nominee, he said.

    Daniels is a good man and a successful govenor. This has got to be good news for Governor Pawlenty and Governor Romney. And if Cain and Bachmann get get some votes in the primaries they might become a VP considerations.

      Pawlenty is ok but not that great for president. We had him for governer. I’d go with Cain or Christie if he had chosen to run. I don’t know enough about some of the others to say other than Huckabee isn’t the right person for the job. He isn’t outspoken enough. Cain is which I like and Christie is.

          I’ve always thought Bachmann too until I started thinking about demographics. Cain and Rubio would cover the bases (blacks and hispanics). Both are staunch conservatives, fresh faces, good track records, well spoken and would put the media on a dumbfounded footing which would be a welcome thing. Think about it. CAIN AND RUBIO 2012.

      Legal technicality. Indiana did not pass a law giving police authority to enter a home at-will. It was an interpretation of already existing law. I wonder how many of those members of the state supreme court will still be in office after next year’s elections.

          If you have any idea what the federal reserve is about and what Mt CAIN said about it, you wouldn’t have to wonder. Federal Reserve established by CONGRESS to supervise banks for them. They control by appointing 7 of the 12 members of the board, they receive semiannually reports and audits. If there is problem in fed reserve where do you think we should look? How about congress do it’s job instead of continuous campaigning and fund raising. Mr Cain agrees is should be supervised as intended.

    Let me just say, at the very risk of sounding “racist” that I do not want to see another black man in the White House after this. By then some things are going to be more obvious to the general public about those candidates running and I don’t think America is ready to accept anything remotely like what we have now including the color of his skin. This administration has been divided more on every level than anything we’ll ever need to see again. I come from a state with many black politicians and they are all corrupt with power even though some did not start out that way. It took less than their first year in office and they sold out so any black man even one voted in will be ultimately hated by both sides and it will not help to pull America out of this pit. Sorry, it can’t happen again. They don’t get my vote. One word of warning, white men don’t try to compensate and don’t act out of any false guilt. We do not need a black president again with what will be already in place and waiting for him.

        To DEFEAT; ok, I will accept that from you if you say that my opinion now is racist. I am just being honest based on what I feel and have seen and know. I did not feel this way about Colin Powell and actually thought very highly of him. Maybe this whole Obama administration has changed that for me, not sure. Neither do I excuse my own ideas or opinions but I will hope to improve in those areas that I am wrong in and thank you for the search light. I am grateful.

        Let me try this again, I have replied to you DEFEAT, but it was not put up for some reason – yet. I will accept what you have said against me as being racist although I have never been considered that in my life. Neither do I seek to justify myself or make false denials. But I have simply stated my opinion from my feelings based on my experience and perceptions of this present administration. I sincerely believe it is not in our best interest to have another black president again. I am sorry to offend you and others and I hope that something will prove me wrong. I certainly don’t want to be of all things – a racist.
