From Social Security to Food Benefits, It’s Welfare Gone Wild

The numbers are in, and the news is bad: our public benefits system has gone to rack and ruin. From Social Security to food programs and other pillars of the welfare state, waste, fraud, and abuse is rampant.

Take disability payments. According to an Inspector General’s report obtained by Pajamas Media, the Old-Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance program (OASDI) has provided significant benefits to people who should not have them — including the dead. A newly commissioned audit reveals that more than 2,900 dead people may have received more than $23 million in Social Security disability insurance payments.

Bureaucracy, its own excuse, strikes again. As of Feb. 2009, the report goes on to note, there were also more than 6,000 people on the books whose benefits had been suspended, and whom the SSA knew were dead. And in nearly half of the cases, someone had been receiving payments for people who were dead.

One’s lack of confidence in the likelihood of reform could be excused. An IG’s report is supposed to answer questions. This one, unfortunately, raises many more than it answers. How, for instance, did the Social Security system get so out-of-whack in the first place?

Stories can be drawn from nearly every state and nearly every federal benefits program. Who can forget the FEMA debit cards being used at strip clubs in the wake of Hurricane Katrina?

Add in the lottery winner who’s still on food stamps and the “adult baby” who’s on disability and it becomes obvious the system is woefully broken. Where are the politicians with the guts to fix it?

    In Kentucky, I once had to be on food stamps (when they were the coupon books, not electronic cards) between jobs. When I got a new job, I offered to send the ones that I had not used, back. They said, no, those are yours to use. I put them aside, knowing how bureaucracy does things, and sure enough, a few weeks later, I got a letter saying that since I was working, the amount was pro-rated and I owed them money. Instead, I sent the coupons back! Otherwise, I would have been in a financial bind to repay them at that time.

    A small camera?? My friend, all you have to do is go to a grocery store at the first of the month, and you can see it FIRST HAND! It’s not just AL, I live in SC, and we see it all the time. I travel 12 states, from FL to WV, and I assure you, it’s like that EVERYWHERE! They have buggies with their groceries in it, pay for them with their food stamp card, and then wheel the “other” buggy up with beer and other items that food stamps won’t pay for. They whip out cash for these items, and their wallets are FULL of cash. Yes, I have seen them load their free groceries into shiny new cars. It’s everywhere, and you have not experienced RAGE until you witness this scene first hand. I encourage you, descend on the grocery stores the first of the month. It’s especially outrageous when the person using the food stamp card CAN’T SPEAK ENGLISH!

Our government and some of our own people have ruined the system. The government allowed thousands of illegals to have welfare which was wrong. And there are those of us living here legally abusing the system collecting what they aren’t really qualified for. One example is the guy that wins a million dollars. Did he lose his food stamps even though he has plenty of money and savings now? No he is still receiving them. And why is that? Apparently some of our politicians don’t know the law or the minions in charge don’t know what’s allowed and what isn’t. And of course there are those too lazy to work.

The reality is that the economic bust happened on a Republican President’s watch, and that the Obama Stimulus helped but did not help enough because it was not generous enough.

‘C’mon, Republicans held the presidency and both house and senate during the Bush years – and delivered economic disaster by waging two wars and cutting taxes at the same time.

Are there a few people on food stamps illegally? Yes. But less than 1%. Everyone else is working for wages so low they cannot both house and feed their families without food stamps.

It’s the Republican jobs program folks. Instead of raising the debt to enable the government to give business to American companies that have to hire Americans at good wages to meet the demand (which allows said employees to give YOUR business money). Instead of that, let’s leave businesses to face going out of business or slashing wages and hours so they only hire part time and at minimum wage.

That way jobs will return to the USA, when the American worker will work for 1/2 of what a Chinese worker will accept.

I worked and lived for over 25 years in the poorest sections of NYC. My job required and allowed me to enter any apt that I felt needed to be entered without a permit. Inside these poor citizens apts were most times, plasma TV, computers, expensive clothes and outside on the street, many expensive foreign cars. Also in these poor neighborhoods are many nail salons and hair salons, both busy 24/7. These people know they cannot be made to work. There are generation after generation on welfare, sec 8 housing, food stamps, medicaid, etc, etc, etc. Until this is ended, we go downhill faster and faster.

If the illegals were taken off all state aid, no matter what nationality, I believe that, by doing that, we would start with a huge reformation in the welfare, ssi, food stamps department! Next, charge everyone 10% tax no matter what you make & you’ll wipeout handouts & cut costs by billions of dollars in savings to California & the federal government. That way no huge benefit payments for government union employees! This next year, due to ObamaCare, we will pay an extra $8,300 for the year in benefits! That’s $22,300 in benefits for the year in a job bringing home $65,000 a year before benefits & taxes for a family where the mother does not work! Since that’s pre-tax, we are making $42,700 & then take out taxes, etc…. So bring home is $700 every 2 weeks with a $1858.00 house payment……. John McCain stated his aim to end affirmative action, Palin stated her will to end lobbies, the combined result would be a responsible government. Affirmative action personnel fill the social security and social wefare evaluators positions, hired with predisposing reasons other than the integrity of the job position, the integrity of the positions are gone, the people are incapable of doing their jobs, they are biggots, granting social services to blacks, while forcing the whites into homelessness, and into prisons, acting out the positions of probation and payroll agents attack whitey unmercifully

I have to agree that anytime I have to go down and deal with my local county agency due to their own fault (they even put it in black and white) that I feel like I amongst a group of people called loosers gone wild. My husband and I both are on social security and he is on an transplant list, he needs this in order to survive. Never had we gotten food support or anything in the past. After obtaining our social security and allowed to get food support based on the counties chart of eligabilities it has come to our attention that the worker who was employed there for 27 years, had calculated things wrong, she admitted it, and even though it was her fault we have to pay back that amount of over issuance and they can take it from our social security because it is considered a federal debt. How’s that for freaking justice? Thats like going to prison for a crime you didnt commit and have the real criminal standing in court beside you admitting they done it and you still being charged with the crime. Our government is totally out of control and they have lost sight to the priorities that need to be first and foremost. Its a sad sad sad state of affairs that we live in here in the US anymore.

  That’s what Mexicans do. Carlos Garcia Menendez is also known as Carlos Garcia, Carlos Menendez, Carlos Menendez Garcia, Carlos G. Menendez, Carlos M. Garcia. There are so many Mexicans using the same names that the average non-thinking bureaucrat doesn’t even bother to check for fraud.

I have paid into Social Security since 1963. I have never been without a job and have reluctantly “done my duty” thinking that I would never draw a penny of my forced withdrawals. Well, surprise, I am now drawing a little bit of what I’ve “contributed.” I am still skeptic enough to believe it won’t last but I do appreciate a little return on my “investment.”
I’ll admit that Social Security is being drastically abused, but I resent it being lumped in with welfare. My little retirement check is not part of a give away program.

I’m not even reading this article, I just want to tell Washington, My social security is not an entitlement!!! I paid into it all my working life. Get off it! I pay insurence premiums for my auto and home, Is it an entitlement program? Get off it! Paying premiums on a life insurance policy must mean I’m entitled to be buried when I die!!!
