U.S. Gas Prices: Four More Dollars?

The National Center for Policy Analysis’s Sterling Burnett this month published an excellent analysis of America’s energy needs and costs. Today solar power is close to our fastest-growing renewable energy source. Its production grew 15.5% in 2009, but it still accounts for less then 0.5% of global electric power output. And it isn’t cheap: subsidized solar energy costs between $220 and $300 a megawatt hour, compared with $110 for electricity nationwide.

That breaks down to $63.10 a megawatt hour for natural gas, $113.90 for nuclear power, $136.20 for modern coal-fired plants, and $210.70 for solar photovoltaic power. According to the Heritage Foundation the subsidies we pay are $23 per megawatt hour for solar and wind, compared with $1.59 for nuclear power, 44 cents for conventional coal, and 25 cents for natural gas. We must start becoming competitive, without large subsidies, to reduce the current distortion in our energy markets.

We should also end the 45-cent-a-gallon subsidy of ethanol, which yields one-third less energy per gallon than gasoline. The cost of ethanol subsidies total about $6 billion per year. Sens. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Dianne Feinstein of California have introduced a recent bill to do away with the subsidies, along with a 2.5% tariff and 54-cent duty on imported ethanol.

To put it all in the perspective of the environmentalists and the current administration, consider the statement of Energy Secretary Steven Chu in The Wall Street Journal: “Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the prices of gasoline to the levels in Europe.” The current gasoline price is about $8.50 a gallon in England and $8.80 in France and Germany.

Our Energy Czar has said that U.S. gas prices will necessarily have to rise to the level of Europe in order for us to be pushed to more energy efficient cars.

Expect the price to double then, just in time, Obama will step in to lower them 1 or 2 dollars.

He will make a speech using “I” 137 times. Overnight, he will become the darling of the MSM and will be heralded as the hero of the American people.

      Actually you are incorrect. CO2 is not a dangerous gas or a pollutant. Plants need it to survive. CO2 only constitutes .2% of our atmosphere and currently is 385 parts per million. In the age of the dinosaurs CO2 was much more prevalent in the 7000-8000 ppm range. To truly get dangerous you need to get to 10,000-20,000 ppm range.

A small diesel engine runs a generator which powers electric motors; developed technology easily transferred to cars and trucks. No alcohol, no plug-ins, no batteries.       Good point brining up diesel power. If you recall General Motors did introduce the 5.7L diesel in the late 70′s and 80′s. The problem was the high-pressure-distributive-fuel pumps went bad and were not reliable resulting in engine bucking, smoke, no power and all the symptoms of a blown engine. Replace the high-pressure-pump (not cheap) and it ran smooth as a kitten.
      Seems Germany is the leader in ‘next generation diesel engines’, and I understand diesel powered vehicles are popular in Europe due to their fuel economy. But we still need serious oil production in the United States to become fuel/energy independent.

  Back in 2004 or 05 when the prices were skyrocketing our Congress started talking about getting more domestic sites to pump more oil and suddenly the prices dropped like a rock. The OPEC nations were afraid they would get stuck with excesses of oil so they dropped the price of oil by the barrel.
  Just recently when Boehner started talking about getting Obama to open more leases on the Gulf oil sites the same thing started with oil prices and even gas prices were slower, but they too have started dropping.
  
  Tell your congressman to beat the drums loudly for more domestic drilling in ALL of our oil holding sites. Why save it for when the Muslims take over? LET’S USE IT OURSELVES NOW! Don’t save it for someone else.

How do we identify just what is a “renewable” source of energy? I have come up with a common sense set of criteria.

First the source has to produce more energy than it takes to operate and maintain whatever system is being evaluated. Secondly it must produce enough energy to completely replicate itself entirely when it wears out and have energy left over to use. Take for example a wind generator. If it was truly renewable it would produce enough energy when sold to cover every step from site acquisition, site preparation, the manufacture of every one of its components, on site construction of the tower and generator, maintenance, the distribution infrastructure, eventual replacement of itself and still have energy left over to use for other purposes. The same would apply for “renewable” solar, hydro and biomass.

The only way to sort out future energy is to remove every subsidy and let the market pick the winners. Government can’t and won’t do it because of special interests and environmental lobbying.

The ethanol initiative is yet another foolhardy boondoggle by the foolhardy liberals. Not only does it produce 1/3 less energy than an equivalent amount of gasoline when burned, it also takes more fossil fuels to produce it than what we get out of it. So, how does the production of ethanol reduce so-called “greenhouse gases” in the environment? The ethanol program should be scrapped immediately.

Generating ‘green electric (solar, wind)’ has two problems: Very expensive and low capacity. Then add that the wind does not always blow and the sun does not always shine.
What the media and Government fails to tell us is that less than 1% of generated electric comes from ‘green sources’ and we generate greater that 2% from wood and garbage fired plants. Now that is real progress. . . . . .

Interesting article in today`s WSJ about the fallacy of renewable energy.
It seems that most renewable energy is wood turned into charcoal which has depleted wood supplies and dung. Wood only grows so fast and living things produce only so much dung. Yet, renewable resources account for only 0.5% of all energy. Check it out.
