Rep. Connie Mack won the Republican Senate primary in Florida on Tuesday and will take on Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in November.
With 34% of precincts reporting, Mr. Mack had 59% of the vote, compared with 21% for former Rep. Dave Weldon, 13% for retired Army Col. Mike McCalister, and 7% for online columnist Marielena Stuart.
The Senate contest is expected to be hard-fought, with recent polling showing Mr. Mack narrowing Mr. Nelson’s lead to a few percentage points. Republicans consider Mr. Nelson vulnerable, and super PACs have been running a flurry of ads seeking to tie him to President Barack Obama’s record.
Mr. Nelson won the Democratic primary with 80% of the vote, compared with 20% for businessman Glenn Burkett.
