Instead of overreacting to President Obama’s gun control initiative – the executive actions were modest and the legislative proposals are going nowhere – conservatives should be far more concerned by what his remarks on the topic revealed: that their president has serious contempt for them and their views.
The foundation of a democracy is the assumption that while you disagree with your opponents, they too have the interests of the America – and yes, its children – at heart. And yet for all Obama’s supposed intellect, what we hear from him time and again is the usual prosaic, unthinking liberal contempt for conservatives, who are viewed as evil, dumb, or both.
Take a look at the seething contempt that was unloaded as Obama announced his gun control program:
There will be pundits and politicians and special interest lobbyists publicly warning of a tyrannical, all-out assault on liberty — not because that’s true, but because they want to gin up fear or higher ratings or revenue for themselves. And behind the scenes, they’ll do everything they can to block any common-sense reform and make sure nothing changes whatsoever . . .
