The unemployment rate ticked up a tenth of a point to 5.5 percent in May as the participation rate also increased from 62.8 percent to 62.9 percent, according to data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The labor force participation rate is the percentage of the civilian noninstitutional population who participated in the labor force by either having a job during the month or actively seeking one.
