Listening to Barack Obama’s supporters defend his performance in the first presidential debate, one almost feels sorry for them. The only conclusion to be drawn from their defensive posturing is that the president’s supporters are terribly ill-informed; either that or they just enjoy being lied to. Observing the bovine docility with which Obama supporters accept everything he says without question, one must conclude that the liberals have finally done it. By dumbing down public education they have created just what they wanted: a generation of voters so intellectually lazy and fully indoctrinated that they cannot think for themselves.

I came away from the first presidential debate convinced that one of two things must be true about President Obama’s supporters: 1) Either they are so completely lacking in discernment that they will believe anything the president and his loyal minions in the mainstream media say, or 2) They enjoy being lied to. If you think either of these statements is an exaggeration, consider some of the things President Obama said in answer to the moderator’s questions. He continually stated that Governor Romney’s tax plan would raise taxes on the middle class. Here is what the Heritage Foundation had to say about that deliberate distortion: “This incorrect assertion was spread by a biased report from the Tax Policy Center. Romney’s plan can make pro-growth changes to the tax code and doesn’t have to raise taxes on the middle class.” President Obama and the media know this.

Obama claimed several times that a business is allowed a tax deduction for moving jobs overseas. This is an outright falsehood. There is no such deduction, and Obama and the media know it. The president made a big show of using increased funding to education as a strategy for reducing unemployment and the deficit. The Heritage Foundation’s assessment of the president’s strategy is telling: “Since the 1970s, federal per-pupil expenditures have more than doubled (after adjusting for inflation). Those increases haven’t all gone to the classroom or toward teacher salaries. Much of the money has gone toward expanding bureaucracy and non-teaching administrative positions in our nation’s public schools.”

One could add that public school performance during the same period has decreased as federal funding has increased. Further, consider Obama’s plan to increase federal funding for higher education. Approximately 50 percent of last year’s college graduates could not get a job, and President Obama wants to increase the number of people going to college—this while 80 percent of the best jobs available in America require not a college education but postsecondary technical training. The job market is wide open for people with technical training in high-demand occupations that support the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and math). It is not open to another crop of college graduates majoring in Psychology, Women’s Studies, and or Multi-Cultural Awareness.

Finally, President Obama claimed several times that he has decreased taxes on middle-income families. I will give Romina Boccia of the Heritage Foundation the last word on this distortion: “Obama proclaimed that he reduced taxes for the middle class. What he failed to mention is that he also increased taxes on the middle class (give with one hand and take back with the other). Let’s not forget that the President’s healthcare law will raise taxes on the middle class and the poor in four years as reported by the Congressional Budget Office. For instance, a family of four making about $24,600 per year, the projected federal poverty level in 2016, could be subject to Obamacare’s controversial individual mandate tax. This is only one of the 18 taxes and penalties imposed by Obamacare, some of which will hit Americans as early as January 2013.” Governor Romney challenged all of Obama’s deliberate distortions during the debate with hard and proven facts. So how have the president’s supporters responded? They claim Romney is lying. What can you say to people who are proud of their ignorance and enjoy being lied to?
