Adult Baby Syndrome: Another Undeserving Group of Welfare Recipients

Welcome to the land of the freeloaders and the home of the depraved. No image captures America’s regressive ethos better than that of 30-year-old Stanley Thornton Jr., self-proclaimed “Adult Baby.” Profiled on a recent National Geographic reality television show, Thornton claims to suffer from a bizarre infantilism that leads him to wear diapers, lounge around in an oversized crib and seek constant coddling.

The nappies may be extreme, but let’s face it: Thornton Jr. — let’s just call him Junior — is a symptom of our Nanny State run amok, not an anomaly.

Junior came to Washington’s attention this week when Oklahoma GOP Sen. Tom Coburn challenged the Social Security Administration to probe into how the baby bottle-guzzling 350-pound man qualified for federal disability benefits. A former security guard, Junior is handy enough to have crafted his own wooden high chair and playpen.

Junior can drive a car and has sense enough not to go out in public in his XXL footie pajamas. Yet, welfare administrators treat him as an incurable dependent. Also collecting taxpayer-subsidized paychecks: Thornton’s adult roommate, a former nurse, who has indulged Thornton’s baby role-playing for the past decade.

Junior, naturally, threw a tantrum when his government teat-sucking was called into question. He wiped his nose and un-balled his fists long enough to type out an e-mail to The Washington Times: “You wanna test how damn serious I am about leaving this world, screw with my check that pays for this apartment and food. Try it. See how serious I am. I don’t care,” Junior threatened. “I have no problem killing myself. Take away the last thing keeping me here, and see what happens. Next time you see me on the news, it will be me in a body bag.”

Not from nowhere has this stubborn, self-destructive sense of entitlement sprung. As I reported last month, a record-breaking 12 million Americans have been added to the federal food stamp rolls over the past two years, and the bloated $6 billion AmeriCorps social justice army has been converted into a publicist corps for the welfare machine.

Just this week, a Michigan man boasted that he’s still collecting food stamps after winning a $2 million government-sponsored lottery prize. “If you’re going to … try to make me feel bad, you aren’t going to do it,” he told a local TV reporter. Embedded in his rebuke is the eternal refrain of the self-esteem-puffed teenager: “You can’t judge me!”

Diana West, author of “The Death of the Grown-Up,” traced the modern abdication of adulthood to the Baby Boomer generation. “The common compass of the past — the urge to grow up and into long pants; to be old enough to dance at the ball (amazingly enough, to the music adults danced to); to assume one’s rights and responsibilities — completely disappeared” after World War II. A culture of behavioral restraint gave way to “anything goes” and morphed into the current generation’s “whatever” attitude.

Look around: Junior’s infantilism is of a piece with the refusal of celebrity mothers Dina Lohan and Tish Cyrus to act like parents — and instead serve as best friends and tattoo parlor pals for their wayward daughters Lindsay and Miley. They’re the kind of women who shop at Forever 21, buy beer for their daughters’ prom parties and give them Botox certificates for high school graduation.

Junior’s penchant for pajamas is of a piece with perpetually stunted Hugh Hefner’s fetish for velvet robes 24/7 and self-indulgent decadence. Junior’s giant playpen is a cringe-inducing symbol of the Farmville-tethered, “funemployed” class of self-gratifiers who continue to live for today and spend like there’s no tomorrow.

Adult Baby Syndrome isn’t an isolated pathology. It’s the new American Way. Or, I should say, the new American Wahhhhh.

  I had Cancer in 1980 and couldn’t work for a couple months. Husband worked for the county making 3.50. hr. I babysat 3 other kids besides my own. I couldn’t do that for awhile. Tried to get food stamps just for a bit. They say no. Your husband makes 15.00 a week too much. We were denied. Never ask again.

    My dad had house rented to a woman with 3 kids thru HUDD and her husband was in jail. Hudd paid 400.00 for her rent. She got food stamps. She also received Food Stamps. We figured out that she was Getting more Stuff for Free than my Husband Made. Plus she worked and got paid under the Table. IS THIS WHAT OUR WORLD IS COMING TO???? THEY gave six months to live but I’m still here and work and have never ask for any help from anyone again.?? I have my Pride. Ha ha…..

    I was injured in a job related accident, caused by an injury I got while serving in Viet Nam. I get $958.00 a month, from the Veterans Administration, for a 100% non-service connected disability(it is called a pension). I am unemployable. I could work, if I could find an employer who would be willing to employ me at a wage better than what I get from the VA; only there aren’t any such employers out there.
    I n short, the V.A. pays me not to work, so I don’t work. On top of that, I am also ineligible for welfare, in way, shape or form – I make too much money to qualify. I am also not able to get Social Security, but even if I was, I would not accept any of that money, as the Social Security Administration is, technically, broke.

      i feel you brother. i was sent to iraq in march 2003. found out in nov 2005 that i had had some cardiac problem that i was never treated for, even though its in my med records. that was a bit too late though, i’m now running on about 35% heart function. i get paid that same non-service connected pension, even though it documented in my records that i’d had some problem but was not treated. i’m still fighting the VA over this

  It is called: “Involutary Taxation”. According to the law, the paying of Income taxes is supposed to be a voluntary thing; but back when FDR was in office, he issued an Executive Action, which, basically, told every one to pay income taxes, as it was for the good of the country. That “EA” expired six months after the Japs surrendered; but the people in this country continued to pay taxes; and kept on even when they knew they didn’t have to. Not it is accepted that paying taxes is our “moral obligation(?)”, our “privilege”?

Let Jr. go hungry for a while and see how fast he’ll straighten out. I have tasted what its like to go to bed hungry and seen my mother desperate to try and feed her children. Yet we had no government assistance and grew up to be productive citizens! If Jr. decides to die by starvation maybe he will change his mind when he sees how good looking he is as a normal thin person.

I agree, robin from Arcadia, we all aren’t all sucking from the government teat, but many of us have made bad,bad,bad decisions. Some don’t want to pay for those decisions or refuse to accept they made these decisions on their own. They want blame others for their lot in life.

I wonder if they took a head count of the ‘adult babies’ just how many are livng off the government? Most of our welfare was set up as a stopgap to help after we had a crises such as house fire, accident or any loss where we temporarily needed help. I worked at one point for the ECHO food bank and we kept a file on everyone that came in for food. You were allowed only two food cartons a year. New mothers got monthly food items if they qualified up until their child was two years old. I thought that was fair and it helped those that really needed it and not those too lazy to work or whatever. Maybe the government should take a page from ECHOs book.

I retired 11 years ago from 30+ years in law enforcement and have worked at a part time job,”PAYING TAXES” ever since. We raised two productive children that have worked and paid taxes since they were 16 yrs old. As long as we have bleeding heart liberals in politics that will support this kind of crap to “BUY” votes, this will continue to be the kind of crap people will pull. Put him out on his butt and he will find work. I doubt he will hurt himself much less kill himself!

Great topic, but you are only scraping the surface. Most of the welfare, social security disability and medicaid programs are nothing but scam programs. With the baby boomer starting to retire we need to end these disgusting programs because able bodied people need to work. These programs also increase illigitimate births, which the tax payer subsidizes for years, if not the lifetime.
We need to take a meat cleaver to these programs. I am a baby boomer but have worked all my life and probably will until the day i drop dead. I was an inner city policeman for twenty one years and I saw more of this crap than you can imagine. It’s disgusting. Lastly, you wouldn’t believe how many criminal illegal aliens are collecting disability checks and most politicians could care less.

  I beg to differ…about Social Security or Disability. I worked for 38 yrs (Nurse) but had to go on disability due to arthritis. Trust me, going from a clear $3600/month to $1,000/month is a real shocker. Try living on that!! No food stamps, no Medicaid. I had the common sense to pay off my car, my credit cards, etc BEFORE I began drawing SSDI. I’ve since cut up ALL credit cards (not that I ever used them a lot) and I live very modestly. When they do stop SSDI and all the other Gov run “programs”, people are going to freak, especially those that Welfare is a way of life. Generations of Welfare recipients will spaz out. I do agree that Welfare is completely out of control…but…not SSDI for those that honestly cannot work (like myself). Unlike those that can (but won’t) work, I earned & was rightfully entitled to my Disability.

    Just thought you might like to know . . . there are Nutritional Supplements out there which can relieve the symptoms of Arthritis and other degenerative diseases. I’ve personally know people who have gone from total disability to fully functional in less than 90 days. Note: age does affect the time frame for results, as does the extent of damage to the joints.

    I agree with you, Vindi, and after working as a nurse for 38 years, you are only receiving BACK the money you paid IN. The problem with the whole system is the cheats. On another blog, I told of a 16 year old boy who was receiving $900 a month disability. His disability? He is “afraid to be in crowds”. He was at a fair with 25,000 people. Now, this 16 year old boy has never paid a dime into SS, and he gets almost as much as you do, after working and paying into the system all those years. So, if the deadbeats weren’t getting all that money, how much more could you, and others like you, get a month? Maybe enough to live on, and live decently. What a mess!

  It’s a crying shame that people like you and I – who really earned, need and deserve SSDI -had to fight to get it, and this piece of $#!T, grabs a diaper and pacifier and starts collecting! I have a painful nerve disorder, arthritis, migraines so bad that they cause hallucinations, and I STILL tried to work! But I didn’t know that people where I tried to apply for a job had seen me having balance issues a few months earlier. They wouldn’t even give me an application because they said I was a ‘liability’. The worst thing is that it’s the only place within walking distance to my home and I can’t drive any more because of the dizzy spells that hit out of the blue. So, I thank God that it only took me 5 years to finally collect, and am able to once again contribute to my family’s finances.

What needs to be done is to galvanize people and take to the streets in protest instead of spilling our guts on these sites.

March on Washington with a few hundred thousand people, cause protestors to get beaten by brutal law enforcement, show clips of people being dragged away and arrested, and maybe you might get noticed.

Keep that up long enough, and martial law will be declared, and then you’ll really get noticed.

The point is you have to be a squeaky wheel, and sometimes you even need to fall off the car before you get any attention.

  If a person comes to the USA and stays, but doesn’t have the proper paper work to be here, I wouldn’t give them a minute over 2 months – and that’s more than a generous amount of time – then ship them out. The answer to removal of fraud from any entitlement program is simple.Drug test the applicants,and I don’t mean urine tests.Hair samples are far more telling and all but impossible to mask.Anyone with anything in their sytem that’s not prescribed should be eliminated from receiving welfare,food stamps,disability,and unemployment in particular.Anyone that truly seeks to become re-employed is subject to testing before getting hired anyway.

We are absolutely for drug testing for welfare and food stamps or any other public dole. Too much taxpayer money is going up the freeloaders’ noses or into their veins. Where the real problem lies is with the cash assistance (state welfare) programs, Food Stamps, Medicaid, and Section 8. I knew someone in Connecticut who collected it ALL, and as far as Section 8…he collected the security deposit and first month’s rent on an apartment, lived there for 18 months – which was how long you had to wait to collect them again – collected them again and had the security deposit on the first apartment returned to HIM, not to the state! He continued to do move and collect money every 18 months until he went to jail…but not for that because what he did was completely LEGAL! (Like that greedy bastard that won $2 million and still collects food stamps. Completely legal.) The entire welfare system (like the entire government) NEEDS a complete overhaul.
As far as this 350 pound turd named Junior:
He says he’ll off himself if his checks are stopped. Well, why then haven’t the guys from the nut house gone after him? He won’t need to collect a check when he’s in his padded room in a straight jacket, now will he? It would be a great opportunity for him to get the psychiatric help he obviously needs to get him to put on his ‘big (apparently very big) boy pants’ and learn how to live in the REAL world. If things work out the way they should, he’ll get a job when he’s released. If not, stop his checks. He’ll either get a job or get a toe tag.

I’m sick of working my butt off, and having 1/3 of my salary taken every pay period, as most hard working Americans, to pay for all these PARASITES and their trumped up phony disabilities. Put them and all the other entitlement PARASITES out in the fields working and picking the crops, they say only illegals will do. Watch how fast they decide a regular job is better than the fields and decide to get off these programs. Sounds harsh, but you know what Hitler or Stalin would have done with these people? If they didn’t or wouldn’t work, he’d of terminated them. Now don’t get me wrong, there are those who are TRULY disabled, but these people like him, druggies, alcoholics, etc. SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT. My daughter came up with a great idea for illegals. She said “why don’t we trade the citizenship of our LAZY PARASITIC LEGALS, to the working, non criminal, illegals, and send the legals to the illegals countries to live in the illegals place. That way we’d have a more productive America again. Makes sense to me.
