Liberals’ Big Lie of Equality

Written on January 26, 2012 by David L. Goetsch

economic equality

Liberal politicians who favor big government typically justify their misguided worldview on the basis of equality, fairness, and social justice.  They like to claim that government is more fair and just than the free market, although they are unable to provide any evidence to support their claim.  Frankly, in most cases their real justification is more likely to be that letting voters become dependent on the government treasury has become the most dependable way to get elected or re-elected in America.  Addicts are very loyal to their suppliers.

For the sake of argument, assume that big-government advocates are really committed to bringing about equality, fairness, and social justice through government coerced social engineering.  Would this misguided sincerity on their part make taking from one person and giving to another irrespective of merit any less objectionable?  Hardly.  Equality that is based on taking from productive citizens and giving to the less productive is not equality at all.  It is legalized theft, and the thief is the government.  Rationalizing legalized theft on the basis of equality, fairness, and social justice is the big lie of liberals.

Government-coerced equality, fairness, and social justice are a lie because they: 1) are not a legitimate role of government, 2) are not an enumerated power in the Constitution, 3) do not work, 4) allow politicians and government bureaucrats to determine what is equitable, fair, and just, 5) encourage an unhealthy dependence on government, and 6) devastate the economic well being of society.  In fact, big government is inherently unequal, unfair, and unjust.  By undermining the economic freedom of its most productive citizens, big government also undermines the personal freedom of all Americans.  Without personal freedom there can be no equality, fairness, or justice.  Consequently, by seeking to establish an arbitrary state of equality, fairness, and justice in society, government is exceeding its Constitutional authority on one hand while ignoring a Constitutional mandate on the other.  That mandate is to protect the freedom of all American citizens.  Legalized theft protects the freedom of neither its victims nor its supposed beneficiaries.

It is absurd to avow that it is somehow equitable, fair, and just to take from a productive person and give to a less productive or unproductive person, to claim that one is helping the poor by hurting the rich, or to state that one is assisting the unemployed by undermining the competitiveness of employers who create jobs.  Where is the equality, fairness, and social justice in these practices?  The concept of being our brother’s keeper implies voluntarily helping each other.  When a “have” gives to a “have-not” it should be in the form of charity or opportunity, not government coercion.  How is it fair and just when a person who prospers by working long, hard, and smart has his assets forcibly taken by government and given to an able-bodied person who would rather milk the system than work?

Does all of this mean there should be no taxes?  No. Government exists to carry out specific responsibilities as enumerated primarily in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution.  These enumerated responsibilities are funded through taxation.  The issue is one of maintaining a proper balance, and big-government programs provided in the name of equality, fairness, and social justice coupled with America’s growing entitlement mentality have tipped the scales in the wrong direction.  As a result, the federal government has grown so far beyond Constitutional intent that if the founders could somehow return for a day they would not recognize their creation.  In fact, they would probably think they had created a monster.

Daves, what about welfare, food stamps, government housing?
Social security is a failed program. The top of the pyramid has grown to wide. When social security was started, life expectancy was only 65 to 70 years. Now that people are living much longer, the system can’t survive without major changes.
I was raised to save for my future and assume responsibility for my own life. The social security system was never meant to take the place of saving and investing.

SS needs a couple of small adjustments to keep it solvent for another 100 years.

Welfare, food stamps, government housing? Less than 5% of our annual budget. In 2010, all low income assistance accounted for 5.3% of the budget.

daves, Not quite sure how it saves “millions of lives” as I don’t know what they were dying of before SS. First families, then churches, then charities helped people. I’m on Social Security, but if I had been able to keep what I paid in (actually it would be better to require people to pay into a fund of their own that they couldn’t touch until a certain age), I would be getting more money than SS.

Nice try, daves! But your logic fails. Paying into SS is NOT an option whereas private individual plans are choice. Your implication that he had a choice is typical of Leftist reasoning in that since he had a choice of a private pension that in and of itself disregards the requirement that he pay into SS. One is free willed, the other not.
As for welfare, food stamps, etc., ALL were intended to be stop-gap, short term aids, NOT a life-long way of life. Conservatives see a difference, Liberals do not.
The simplest way of dealing with it would be for Conservatives to not be forced to support such a system but those of you who think it should be done- YOU pay for it.
Eveyone’s now happy. Conservatives get to preserve and expand their personal wealth, whereas Liberas get to experience what all previous socialist societies have discovered: more and more will quit working so that they can enjoy the fruits of your labor.
What is it you don’t get about this?

That statement of yours pretty much sums up the problem with welfare as well. IF you can spend OTHER people’s money- and not need to work for a living- then why work and why not be living off of other people’s money- welfare?
You have the words, you just lack the understanding of how to apply those words.

You would be correct….IF the big government wasn’t spending the SS money as fast as they can bring it in. The MOST important thing about any government ever is protect the people from the corruption that ALWAYS inserts itself into places of power.

Now, you want to talk about entitlements that really irritate me – welfare, food stamps, public housing – to name a few. GET OFF OF YOUR LAZY BUTTS AND WORK!! Oh, wait, all these people on welfare think they should start out as CEO. Poor pathetic excuses for human beings.

originally, SS was a retirement account funded by each worker. between 1951 and 2003, I contributed ~$200k (and my employers, as much again). had that money been in a savings account for that period, I would be an outright millionaire. today I would be with Romney; donating 20% of my income to charity.

When was the last time modern American government gave a damn about the Constitution? The most these mostly lawyer-career politicians want to know about the Constitution is how to twist it into something other than what it really says or how to ignore or get around it. Jesus did not say, He who has two coats give one to the government and let the government redistribute it. It will NEVER be equal until we do this. Until then the rich will pay 15% if your lucky, the middle ( working class) will pay about 20-36% and the 160,000,000 parasite we have in this nation will pay nothing and yet their b-i-t-c-h about how those who work should pay more. here’s the cure:

Step #1 = Abolish the IRS and all of its tax codes immediately.

Step #2 = Establish a flat 10% tax rate plus a 2% VAT tax where your annual tax obligation is automatically withdrawn from each paycheck. This 10% withdraw will cover the individuals state and federal obligation for the year with no need to ever file a 1040 form. There’s to be no other taxes of any kind for any reason. The 10% is distributed at 2% to the state and 8% the federal government and is to be frozen at 10% for eternity. A 2% VAT is to assure those that make the most and therefore spend the most will be the ones who pay the most because they buy the most.

Step # 3 = State, Federal and VAT taxes are to be frozen forever and will never be more than 10% of you earnings / profits and since all earnings and sales are electronically recorded you cannot hide / shelter them.

If the United States of America cannot run it’s government on 10% of everyone’s income then shut down all non essential programs and keep only those a 10% tax + 2% VAT will support. In conjunction with the fair taxation plan comes no borrowing to sustain or support any programs, period, and the books must be balanced on Dec 31st of each year with the results posted in real time; allowing the public to see where their money is being spent.

Only you the tax paying people of America can stop the insanity of being taxed into poverty and used as a never ending involuntary donor to support the parasite of this world. If you have no balls to abolish the IRS or to mandate the establishment of a fair tax policy, then just change your name to JB ( Johnny Bendover ) and smile as they molest you and your children relentlessly for eternity.

As it stands now and with the current IRS tax code this is exactly what they’re doing to you at this moment.

It’s time for a cashless society worldwide so we can get our financials in order and assure we are all sharing the tax load equally.

    Thumb up Thumb down +1

    • Johnnygard says:

So people rich enough to live off their investments don’t get a paycheck for anyone to withhold 10%, so they would only have to pay the 2% VAT tax on what they buy? A simpler, better way is to JUST have a National Sales tax – no other Federal taxes. EVERYONE would pay when they spend the money, and eventually it all gets spent. No Nat. sales tax on (unprepared) food, medicine or used items (the government only gets money the first time something is sold at retail.) Someone with only enough money for lifes esentials wouldn’t be paying anything. If poor people bought used appliances, cars, etc. they still wouldn’t have to pay tax. But when you get enough money to go out to eat or by new electronic devices, you pay tax. And the rich buy expensive items and they buy more of them than the middle class so they pay more taxes.
