By now, most Patriots will be aware of the bullying of Chick-Fil-A by the liberal mayors of Boston and Chicago, who are basically invoking a religious test for opening businesses in their cities.  I suppose that the Cathy Family could invoke the Jobkiller-In-Chief and claim “we didn’t build that; you liberals built it for us.”

Of course, this business was built (back in 1967), not by government, but by Samuel Truett Cathy, 91, and still going strong as company chairman.  He made the mistake, as far as those liberal mayors are concerned, of being a devout Southern Baptist who has taught Sunday School for over 50 years.  It is for religious reasons that the restaurant chain is closed on Sundays, despite a loss of business.

This business has also created many real jobs.  It costs only $5,000 initial investment to start a Chick-Fil-A franchise, as opposed to about $2 million for many competing chains, so they get far more applications than franchises available.  But the fortunate winners make an average of $190,000 per year, which is not surprising since in 2010, Chick-Fil-A led the industry in making an average of $2.7 million per restaurant, beating even McDonald’s $2.4 million.

It’s not really surprising.  Cathy’s business innovation included a pressure fryer that could cook chicken as fast as a hamburger.  It also uses good-natured advertising poking fun at beef eating, using pictures of cows saying “Eat mor chikin”—evidently the product of education in the Dem-controlled government schools.  And of course, from the beginning, the company insisted that staff provide genuine hospitality to its customers.  I’ve always had very pleasant service whether I have eaten in or gone through the drive-through.

From the profits, the restaurant supports many charities, scholarships, and sporting events.

Chick-Fil-A COO’s stand for marriage

Truett Cathy’s son Dan Cathy, the current COO, has made headlines and upset the liberal ruling class and Leftmedia.  This came from an interview in the Biblical Recorder:

“That [WinShape Foundation] morphed into a marriage program in conjunction with national marriage ministries,”Cathy added.

“Some have opposed the company’s support of the traditional family. Well, guilty as charged,” said Cathy when asked about this opposition.

“We are very much supportive of the family—the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.”

“We operate as a family business … our restaurants are typically led by families – some are single. We want to do anything we possibly can to strengthen families. We are very much committed to that,” Cathy emphasized.

“We intend to stay the course. We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord, we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.”

Notice, nothing in there was “anti-gay,” and there was no evidence of discrimination in hiring or service at his restaurants.   But now, apparently, even a declaration of traditional marriage is enough to offend the so-easily-offended Left.  We saw the same with the vicious vilification of beauty queen Carrie Prejean for saying that marriage is between a man and a woman—in fact, saying something identical to what Obama said at the time.  Obama of course got a free pass, because the Leftmedia knew Obama didn’t mean it, but was then trying to court churchian useful idiots like Rick “40 Days of Pointless” Warren.

The Left’s tolerance at work

The left were furious with Cathy as well.  Chicago Alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno threatened to deny Chick-Fil-A the right to build a restaurant in his ward:

“You have the right to say what you want to say, but zoning is not a right,” he said, adding that it will take “more than words” to get him to change his mind.

“They’d have to do a complete 180,” the alderman said. “They’d have to work with LGBT groups in terms of hiring, and there would have to be a public apology from (Cathy).”

Chicago Mayor Rahm “Never let a crisis go to waste” Emanuel backed up his alderman, claiming that “Chick-Fil-A values are not Chicago values.”  He might well be right: Chicago values seem to be political cronyism and bullying, which explains a lot about our current President.  It’s hardly surprising that, “Last year Chicago had about the same number of murders as New York City, which is three times as large as Chicago.”

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino likewise said, “Chick-Fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston,” and again accused them of “discriminat(ing) against the population.”  Once again, he demanded Separation of Church and Chick-Fil-A (who cares about the First Amendment?), threatening: “If they need licenses in the city, it will be very difficult — unless they open up their policies.” However, he has backtracked, admitting that had no authority to stop Dan Cathy from opening a Chick-Fil-A  restaurant in his city because “that would be interference to his rights to go there.”

And Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray joined in the bullying, ganging up on Chick-Fil-A, saying that he “would not support #hatechicken,” although likewise admitted that he “cannot legally bar them.”

Über-left celebutard Roseanne Barr chimed in charmingly with “anyone who eats S#!t Fil-A deserves to get the cancer that is sure to come from eating antibiotic filled tortured chickens 4Christ.”   Then she issued a pseudo-apology claiming that she, the noted nutritionist and specimen of health, was really concerned about processed food.

To be fair, some on the left have opposed this intolerance.  E.g. the extreme-left New York Times pointed out that “they are not a reason to kick the company out of town”.  It cited with approval the well- known nanny-mayor of New York, Michael “Thou shalt not drink soda” Bloomberg warning:

“You can’t have a test for what the owner’s personal views are before you decide to give a permit to do something in the city.”

Hypocrisy against real intolerance

It’s notable that these oh-so-tolerant people think nothing of buying oil and gas.  Yet much of this comes from Islamofascism-ruled countries that do far worse things to homosexuals than Chick-Fil-A, who said nothing about gays.  Their beloved President just loves to bow towards their leaders, and has abetted the takeover of the once-moderate Egypt by the Muslim Brotherhood, shades of Jimmy Carter opposing the moderate Shah of Iran and allowing the mad mullahs to take over.

Nor would they dare criticize a Muslim for being faithful to his religion.  But the Economist reported in February:

“Of the seven countries that impose the death penalty for homosexuality, all are Muslim. Even when gays do not face execution, persecution is endemic. In 2010 a Saudi man was sentenced to 500 lashes and five years in jail for having sex with another man. In February last year, police in Bahrain arrested scores of men, mostly other Gulf nationals, at a “gay party.” Iranian gay men are typically tried on other trumped-up charges. But in September last year three were executed specifically for homosexuality. (Lesbians in Muslim countries tend to have an easier time: in Iran they are sentenced to death only on the fourth conviction.)”

But as documented in previous Patriot columns, hypocrisy is rife on the Left, including mosque-building v. Quran-burning.

Conclusion

The attacks on Chick-Fil-A are evidence of the growing intolerance, anti-Christian bigotry, appeasement of the GayStapo, and rank hypocrisy in a number of far-left politicians. A good way to spite the left is for Patriots to have lunch at this worthy business with great service and a high moral stand (even vegetarian and vegan patriots can join in!).
