Danger: Automatic Tax Trigger Ahead

Written on Thursday, May 5, 2011 by

A diabolical plot is being hatched between Senate Democrats, the White House and three Republican accomplices — Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, Mike Crapo of Idaho, and Saxby Chambliss of Georgia. The concept is to enact an amendment to the debt limit extension specifying certain targets for deficit reduction and then mandating automatic spending cuts AND tax increases to take effect if the goals are not met.

This formula permits backdoor tax increases on which nobody votes and no fingerprints appear. The taxes just happen automatically. The immaculate conception tax increase.

The plan will vindicate President Obama’s long-term goal: expand the size of the government’s share of the economy. When he took office, federal, state, and local spending accounted for 35 percent of gross domestic product. Now it equals 44 percent. But as long as the extra spending is borrowed, it is not permanent.

So Obama’s goal has been to lock in the higher level of spending by matching it with higher taxes. But even the Democrats are smart enough never to vote for tax increases on the general public and, only with some hesitation, to impose them on the wealthy.

Now, with the automatic trigger, they and their Republican allies can vote for higher taxes while seeming only to be supporting deficit reduction. When the taxes come as a result of the automatic trigger they enacted, they can blame future Congresses for not agreeing to the spending cuts. They can even rail against the tax increases. It won’t matter. The tax hikes will take place automatically.

Of course, what one Congress mandates, another can repeal. But the mechanism of passing a law to block the tax increases is far more difficult. You would need 60 votes in the Senate and control of the House and the presidency — a tall and probably impossible order for future anti-tax Republicans. So the politicians can have it both ways — they can oppose tax increases and watch them take effect without their fingerprints on them.  So the game plan is for the debt-limit extension to stall in the House and for the bipartisan group of six senators to swoop in with their legislation to save the day. It will seem, to all appearances, that they will have mandated deficit reduction as the price for a debt limit hike. So far, so good. But the tax trigger will be part of the package, and we will have stripped Congress of the power to tax and delegated it to an automatic trigger.

The crucial actors in this sham are the three Republicans who are part of the six member “bipartisan” group that is cooking up the idea for the automatic trigger. Without the political cover Coburn, Chambliss and Crapo afford, the Democrats would never be able to push so audacious a plan.  But Coburn has a sterling reputation as a fiscal conservative, as does Chambliss. All three Republican senators were just re-elected (without breathing a word of their true intentions to their constituents). It is vital that all Republicans let these three senators know what we think of their plan for automatic tax increases.

Of course, once the trigger is enacted, the spending cuts won’t happen as promised. Even if they are enacted, the experience with previous spending cut/tax increase deals is that the taxes happen but the cuts don’t.  Even if the spending reductions are actually enacted, they will likely be vitiated by the impact of tax increases on the economy. The taxes will drive down what economic growth remains, depressing government revenues and driving up entitlement safety net spending. As a result, the deficit reduction targets won’t be reached and even more tax increases will have to be triggered. A vicious cycle akin to that which has ruined cities like Detroit will set in.

The Gramm-Rudman Act of the ’80s imposed similar automatic provisions if deficit reduction targets are not met, but these triggers mandated spending cuts not tax increases. Even so, the Supreme Court ruled that the legislation was an unconstitutional delegation of Congress’ power to tax. Likely this deal is, as well. But we must head it off before it gets on the statute books.

Never ceases to amaze me how low they will go to circumvent the system and avoid accountability for what amounts to another “sharp stick in the eye” to the American taxpayer. What an appropriate name for Crapo the RINO.As for Coburn and Chambliss, what the hell were they thinking?

people like Pawlenty when their in power runs
the other way, lets the convicts vote and doesn’t do anything to protect the vote in
fact looks the other way. Now he wants to fool you again and run for president maybe
we could add Trump in the mix wouldn’t that
be a pair to draw too.

Once again our Government is showing why neither party can be trusted, Both parties have a political agenda and it rarely has the best interest of the 98% who have no money, The top 2 % who pay 47 % heve it and by thes tricks, we can see that our government isn’t done. They think they can squeeze more out of us, We got to clean house.

    • Julie

Goes to show us that we need to vote out all the “OLD FARTS” that have served more than 1 term in office. That way we weed out the ones we know for sure have been in cahoots to steal from the American Taxpayers and line their own pockets. We also need to have some sort of Citizen Watchdogs at the polls especially in Chicago to keep the ACORN & BLACK PANTHER’S from intimidating us voters.

  • Paula

I am a conservative by belief but there is NO doubt in my mind that the Republicans are in cahoots with the Dems on spending, taxes, budget cuts! The same folks who got us into this financial nightmare are now trying to tell us they know best how to get us out of it? I CERTAINLY don’t think so, they are all corrupt & we need a new party, mostly we need to clean house come Nov. 2012. There is no end to the dirty little tricks they have up their sleeves & us tax payers will always know after the fact so no one has to be tied to their spend & tax sprees. THEY are lining their own pockets with corrupt dollars while Americans struggle to survive!! SHAME on our Congress!!

  • randy131

Since the government takes in more than 200 times in revenue, as to what is needed to service the national debt, their is never a reason to default on payments on the national debt, unless the President orders it. People need to understand this, and since what the polls say they want as far as raising the debt limit is concerned, they probably already do. So if Congress, or just the Republicans, do as the American people say they want them to do, in every poll by 70-80 percent, refuses to raise the debt limit, then the budget must automatically be balanced, without having to pass a Balanced Budget Amendment and wait to the states to ratify it, and spending cuts will be made, despite what Obama and the Democrats want. It just takes believing in the American people and having the guts to do what the majority of their constituents want, despite the scare mongering of the professional politicians, who don’t want their money spigot turned off. If this would happen, it makes all these other scenarios, arguments, and fights about the budget , spending, and taxes moot. It just takes guts and really caring for what the majority of the American people want!

Coburn,Chambliss and Crapo need to go, as do O and Reid and most dems. The budget needs to lose $3T. Cut to the bone. Pay off debt. No more borrowing. No more printing. Basics only. Private jobs only.Cut 1/2 or 3/4 of all salaries, expenses, travel gov.Essential only. DRILL for America, by Americans in Anwar, midwest, all coasts and develop all energy with own money. No ethanol subsidies,no corporate welfare,no foreign aid, fire all czars, ground O,cut his personal expense budget. No more free campaigning. Unfair. Balance lowest possible budgets.Cut out all fraud, waste, favortism, end IRS,Ed,Energy,Commerce,Homeland,California and New York extra subsidies, end all crooked deals and duplicated depts.Stop lying and corruption.Save America we love.!Quit sneaky changes for worse.Socialists are awful.Love America or leave.Lots of people would adore to live here. You would change your critical tune very quickly in some place with no money,no food,no luxuries like utilities,no job,no house,no friends,no welfare.Shame on lazy Americans who do not realize how good they have it.Appreciate freedom, happiness, wonderful homes and family and friends.America is the best for us.Wish others had better lives in their homes.

I also am an ice cold conservative in my beliefs. We keep electing “politicians” to run our government. As for me, I do not want career politicians running this country any longer. They talk out of both sides of their faces and say very little.
They pass laws on us, but exempt themselves from those laws to benefit themselves and their long term career plans.
As they continue their dubious career objectives, they learn these little tricks to increase their power and their bank accounts, while decreasing ours.
Name one other profession where you spend 4 years working and get retirement and medical for the rest of your life.
Why would anyone spend millions to buy a job that pays $150,000.00 a year?
Is it compassion for the country or the people , is it a strong desire to be a public servant and do what’s right for the masses, is it a desire for power and prestige
    (maybe).
The answers I think, are pretty clear.
    No more career politicians !!!

    • ARMYOF69

Go to GOOOH.COM…..we may still win the day in the long term.

  • Am2sweet

I sincerely hope that the dirty dems and the three turncoat republicans lose out. Coburn, Crapo, and Chambliss need taken out of office. What two faced idiots they are. Who voted them in anyway. IT takes double checking these guys running for office since so many are just jerks wanting power. Then there are the dems buying their office. And lastly are some ‘republicans’ who was a dem but changed hoping to get voted in anyway they can. And this is what you end up with.

  • DRAGO

I would like to recommend we go back to purchasing using exchanges of similar value.
I give a chicken if you give me a pack of cigarettes? No taxes involved, no one knows we did it.
IT IS TIME FOR THIS NATION TO SURVIVE, F.CK the politicians.

  • Arnold Wolf

It would be a great time for a state wide recall of all three Rhino Republicans. The mere fact that a recall is being considered by those who pay their salaries would be sufficient to stop them in their tracks.

    TAX TRIGGER!

Haven’t these fools in Congress ever heard of a “trigger guard”?

Looks like “We The People” will have to keep the “Safety On”.
    LOL

  • LittleOldWoman

We tried to get rid of as many of the rotten Democrats and “old-timers” as we could last November, but we can’t really make any good headway as long as the people in Nevada and California keep Reid and Pelosi (two of the absolutely WORST Democratic congressional members we have ever had!) in office! Why is it that the voters in those two states can’t seem to understand, or maybe they just refuse to see, what those two jackals are doing to ruin this country?

  • Retiree

This is already happening. They said they would not raise taxes on us. What they did was move retirees to another tax bracket, so now IRS is taking $32.00 monthly from my income! This, plus increased Medicare gives me over $608.00 less in yearly income. We are ineligible for social security and get no cost of living increases. Some of us will soon be on food stamps. Yet Congress gets automatic pay increases
