A new Gallup survey about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT, as homosexuals are being termed) people claims that 3.4 percent of the American population falls into one of those categories.
The homosexual population has never been large, despite the deliberately distorted image presented by the news media, television shows and Hollywood movies. But even 3.4 percent is larger than has been found in other studies.
The Gallup survey was conducted by telephone polling of more than 120,000 people.
While it’s difficult to draw comparisons to other studies, this poll puts the LGBT population at around 12 million in the U.S., which suggests that the gay population may be growing.
Two possible clues to this phenomenon and the reasons for it are buried in the data of the poll.
First is the finding that the percentage of homosexuals among poor, uneducated, nonwhite populations is higher than among educated middle-class whites.
The poll found that 4.6 percent of African-Americans identify as LGBT, 4 percent of Hispanics, 4.3 percent of Asians and 3.2 percent of whites.
It also found 3.5 percent of those with a high school education or less, 2.8 percent of those with a college degree and 3.2 percent of those with postgraduate education identified as LGBT.
Homosexuality increases as income decreases, with 5.1 percent of those making under $24,000 annually identifying themselves as LGBT.
With the increasing influx of illegal immigrants, who are typically poor and uneducated, there may be a large influence on the growth of homosexuality in the country.
The other clue that the gay population is growing is in the finding of age differences in the numbers of people who consider themselves LGBT.
Viewed as a scale, homosexuality decreases with age, perhaps reflecting the role of maturity in choosing not to engage in homosexual behavior, or possibly reflecting the toll of what is ultimately a destructive lifestyle. The poll doesn’t explore these issues.
But what’s notable is the huge increase in homosexuality among the under-30 crowd. The results show 1.9 percent LGBT in those 65 and older, 2.6 percent among 50 to 64 year olds, 3.2 percent among 30 to 49 year olds. Under 30, however, the rate of homosexuality suddenly doubles, to 6.4 percent.
That increase is being led by women. In the 18 to 29 age range, 8.3 percent of women and 4.6 percent of men identified as LGBT.
The poll doesn’t get into explanations, but the glaring increase, especially among women, suggests that the obvious Hollywood campaign to promote homosexuality over recent decades, along with efforts to promote so-called “tolerance” education/indoctrination in schools, is paying off for the gay community.
The argument that homosexuality is an inborn trait has never held water as homosexuality by definition is behavior, and all humans not crippled by mental illness or drugs are capable of making choices about their behavior, therefore homosexuality has always been a choice. Whether a person makes that choice due to circumstances of his upbringing or just because of lust, homosexuality remains within the realm of an individual’s control.
The increase of LGBT identification among young people is a tragedy that proves the point and that also reveals the lie of gay “tolerance” and “diversity” education aimed at young children. It isn’t about education, it’s about recruitment. And backed up by TV shows like “Modern Family” that glorify gay couples, and songs like Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl and I Liked It,” it’s an effective campaign.
As the LGBT population grows, pressure will also grow to change society to suit their whims and fads, as we are seeing with the push for gay “marriage.”
