Liberal Culture Was Breeding Ground for School Shooter

The height of hypocrisy is revealed when people who spend their days criticizing conservatives, refuting traditional values, damning religion and removing every sign of God from public life suddenly are shocked when an unstable young man kills almost 30 people, most of them small children.

The sight of liberals mewling about how “something” has changed in our country that encourages mindless violence, but then blaming guns, video games and everything under the sun but the obvious cause, would be funny if it were not such an unspeakably sad commentary on our modern secular culture.

Mike Huckabee is only the latest conservative to be piled on by the Left for observing that the deterioration of education and public morality coincides with the restriction of prayer and religion:

“We’ve made (school) a place where we don’t want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability — that we’re not just going to have to be accountable to the police if they catch us, but one day we stand before, you know, a holy God in judgment. If we don’t believe that, then we don’t fear that. … Maybe we ought to let (God) in on the front end and we wouldn’t have to call him to show up when it’s all said and done at the back end.”

Liberals are incensed at the very notion that the secular culture, rather than the “gun culture” might be blamed for Friday’s shootings. Secularism, after all, is liberals’ bread and butter. To condemn it would mean that liberals, not conservatives, share some responsibility for creating the environment that produces an Adam Lanza.

Better to blame the guns.

So far, Lanza has been described by various people who knew him as a “genius,” a “loner,” a computer nerd, a goth, and a child of a broken home. Those last two facts, particularly the broken home, may bear closer examination in the search for motivations. But on the whole, he sounds like a fairly typical young man.

The media have been quick to jump on the fact that Lanza’s mother owned guns and was strict about his schooling, setting up the narrative that somehow conservatism is to blame. The only thing concrete that is known as far as unusual behavior is that he apparently had some sort of confrontation with officials at the school the day before he went on a shooting spree.

According to media reports, he shot each victim between three and 11 times, including three of the four school officials he had argued with the day before. The methodical killings raise the specter of revenge as a motive, though that is not confirmed yet.

Whatever the motive is finally determined to be, the simple truth is that our modern culture offers no moral guidance, no instruction in righteousness, no discussion of God or encouragement for self-reflection that might provide a solid foundation for building character.

Adam Lanza was a young man without any moral footing to stand on, and the void of our secular culture sucked him into its maw.

And that can be laid right at the doorstep of modern liberals. You cannot advocate and indoctrinate children into nihilism and expect virtue.

Lanza was the product of the modern environment, which is to say he was empty inside. When evil tempted him, there was no “him” to stand up to it.
