November 6, 2012: A Pivotal Day in American History

All presidential elections in America are important, but the one that takes place tomorrow, November 6, 2012, will represent a pivotal day in American history.  On November 6th America will choose between once again pursuing the vision of the Founding Fathers or pursuing the vision of leftwing radicals who reject everything the Founders believed in and sacrificed to establish.  One vision will lead America back to economic prosperity and moral superiority.  The other will lead America over the cliff into an abyss of economic ruin and moral decay.  When Americans walk into the voting booth on November 6th they will confront a fork in the road of American history.  One path leads to economic prosperity and global strength.  The other leads to economic ruin and global impotence.

In a speech to the Republican State Convention in June, 1858, Abraham Lincoln borrowed directly from the Holy Bible in warning his audience that “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” America at the time was a nation divided over the issues of state’s rights and slavery.  America is once again a “house divided.”  But the issue dividing America today is the question of what kind of nation we want to be.  Americans who enter the voting booth on November 6, 2012 will have an opportunity to choose between two vastly different visions for America.

Perhaps nothing better illustrates the two different worldviews in our divided nation better than what occurred in August, 2012 at Chick-Fil-A restaurants throughout America.  One group of people turned out by the thousands to support Chick-Fil-A for speaking up for traditional marriage, basic Christian values, and the First Amendment.  The other group attacked Chick-Fil-A for refusing to toe the line of liberal orthodoxy and support the homosexual agenda.  There are stark differences between these two groups and the kind of America they want.

One group’s vision is an America with limited government that comports with the founding principles and does not stray beyond the boundaries established by the Constitution.  The other group’s vision is an America of an unlimited, ever-growing, increasingly intrusive government that encourages lifelong dependency by addicting citizens to government entitlements. One group’s vision is an America in which taxes are held to the minimum necessary to finance the limited government established by the Constitution.  The other group’s vision is an America in which producers are highly-taxed in ever-increasing amounts to subsidize the lifestyles of unproductive people who make counterproductive choices and expect the government to bail them out and take care of them from cradle to grave.

One group’s vision is an America in which people take personal responsibility for their lives and the lives of their families.  The other group’s vision is an America in which people refuse to take personal responsibility for anything and then blame their circumstances on productive people whose wealth they covet and want to see redistributed, meaning given to them. One group’s vision is an America in which the free-market provides opportunities to prosper for those willing to work hard, smart, and long. The other group’s vision is an America in which a socialistic economy prevails and sloth is rewarded instead of productivity.

One group’s vision is an America in which the sovereignty of the Constitution is protected and the original meanings of the words in the document are faithfully adhered to by judges who interpret but do not change them.  The other group’s vision is an America in which the Constitution is treated as a generic guideline that can be changed constantly to comport with the latest socio-cultural trends by judges who abuse their authorized authority and legislate from the bench.

Tomorrow, November 6, 2012, is a pivotal day in American history.  It is a day in which Americans will decide what kind of country they want to have: the America envisioned by the Founders or a quasi-socialist European state.  The choice is ours.  Let us hope and pray we make the right one.
