Obama, Economic Freedom, And “Fairness”

One of President Obama’s pet projects is promoting “fairness” in America.  By “fair” he means taking resources from people who have earned them and giving them to others who have not. The President’s fairness agenda is nothing more than the tired-old redistribution-of-wealth philosophy that socialists have pushed since the time of Lenin.  The only difference is that President Obama has given it a more palatable name in the same way that liberals try to make abortion more palatable by referring to it as “choice.” What the left refuses to acknowledge is that real fairness is found in economic freedom, not in redistributing wealth by government coercion.

America’s War for Independence was fought in large part to protect the property rights of Americans against repeated violations by the King of England and Parliament.  The first and last of the Federalist Papers—the authoritative commentary on the intentions of the framers of the Constitution—show that the intention of the framers was to protect republican government, liberty, and property.  Federalist Number 10, the most important of the essays concerning ratification of the Constitution, reveals that the government of the United States was designed to protect justice and liberty by protecting private property against the unwise and unjust actions of a ruling majority or a vocal minority.  Private property rights are an essential component of economic freedom.  Wealth, regardless of its make-up, is private property.

One thing that becomes immediately clear from even a cursory reading of the Federalist Papers is that those who framed the Constitution rejected the perversions of justice that President Obama and liberals in Congress advocate in the name of “fairness.”  President Obama and his fellow travelers on the left believe the federal government has the right and the authority to take property (money) from selected Americans and “redistribute” it “equally” among other Americans of their choice.  But Federalist Number 10 makes it abundantly clear that justice consists not of artificially redistributing private property but protecting it and its unequal distribution.

In a free market economy, property is acquired in an unequal manner because the amount of talent, effort, and ingenuity put into its acquisition is inherently unequal.  In other words, some people are willing to work harder, longer, and smarter than others and the fruit of their labor must be protected.  This is justice as envisioned by the framers and by any standard that is not tainted by political bias.  Economic freedom is essential to entrepreneurship, business innovation, commerce, and economic development.  Without economic freedom these things are not possible.  And, as the framers knew, without economic freedom, liberty and justice are not possible.

The beltway around Washington D.C. separates Congress from main street America as effectively as the Atlantic Ocean separated Parliament from the American colonies.  During the Obama presidency Americans have come to feel the same way their colonial predecessors felt when they were being taxed by Parliament without having a voice in the matter.  As president, Obama is obligated by his oath of office to not just obey but protect and defend the Constitution.  This means, among other things, that he is sworn to protect private property, not redistribute it. Fortunately, America’s next revolution will take place at the ballot box rather than on battlefields, but many Americans feel just as disappointed in President Obama and Congress as the colonists did in King George III and Parliament.

But, how can the GOP convince the voters that giving-up their government handouts will improve them and their nation? When you take a baby’s bottle away, all it knows to do is get angry and squall. The people who are sucking at the government’s bottle are a lot like that and they are about half of the populace now.

    • Retired USAF MSgt

This is exactly what they’re counting on!

They play on the concept that your place in life is not your fault but the fault of others and they’re here to help.

The buying of votes (with public money) plain and simple.

      • daves

This is what the President means by fair.

To balance the budget: States are cutting services and charging fees for things that Government provided for free in the past. As well as Congress cutting funds for programs that were designed to help the poor – like early childhood education.

So these are some sacrifices that most of us are making – as well as cutting back on our budgets.

What sacrifices are wealthy people making? They don’t have to cut their budgets and a few more state fees are not going to hurt them.

We are in a bad situation right now and if we all, as Americans, sacrifice a little then we can put our problems behind us.

        • Larry E

You don’t have a clue and wouldn’t recognize one if it bit you on your skanky rump. Fairness is not taking from those who do and giving it to those who won’t or don’t. Fair means everyone gets a chance to do their best, if their best is no good they end up on the bottom of the pile.

I’m sick and tired of you commie/socialist/occupier layabouts whining that you don’t have what others who’ve actually worked for what they have do. Go talk to your lazy worthless buddies, nobody here is interested.

          • AZ Don

Look Daves is misguided, for sure but you nor I will ever get him back on track because be either cannot or doesn’t want to understand reasoning.

You see he does not realize, because he has fallen for obama’s lies, that what I or you or even he earns belongs to the earner no one else including the government. It is our private property. What he doesn’t seem to realize is forcing people to do something against their will sooner or later cause resistance in one form or another. If pushed long enough and hard enough those with the ability to resist will. That is what caused us to revolt against Great Britain. That is why obama is also, no matter what anyone thinks, going to have to confiscate our guns. You see he must be able to control us in order to force us to give up that which we have all worked for. Because he knows sooner or later we will get tired of being pushed.

Daves does not realize the things obama is advocating is not going to work for him either. But he thinks they will. He, right now, sees a benefits to himself, otherwise he would not be supporting obama. Obama claims to support the middle class. But he doesn’t. He cannot support the middle class and at the same time advocate wealth redistribution. Wealth redistribution itself destroys the middle class. Wealth redistribution is Socialism. There are always two (2) financial classes only in socialism. The elites and the peons. Like in the defunct Soviet Union the elites have everything they desire, while the peons barely have enough to survive. The elites make up about one half of one percent of the population, the peons make up the rest. Every country ever transformed into a form of socialism, including communism, marxism or others have always got the people to follow them with lies. Obama has done that very well so far. Getting rid of him in November is the first step to getting back our country, but there will be a long hard road following that first step. The mistake we made in 2008 will take a lifetime to repair.

          • Shannon

I’m not going to comment on any of the points, but I do want to say… “skanky rump”?!? Hahahaha. I’ve heard some of the most creative and hilarious insults just from this website.

Okay, I’ll stop. You guys can go back to blasting each other with accusations and names.

        • ConservaDave

What sacrifices are the wealthy making? Are you kidding me? The top 1% of wage earners make 17% of the total wages earned and pay 37% of total taxes, many often being taxed at the federal, state, local, property and “hidden” taxes levels to a total of over 50% of their earnings and you don’t think this is fair? I am still looking for that Democrat voter out there who can actually think a complete thought and take it to a logical conclusion. By the way, early childhood education has been shown statistically to be of very little to no benefit, unless you’re a member of the teachers union. Exactly what sacrifices have government agencies, unions, public employee unions, government pensioners and receivers of Obama stimulus funds made?

          • daves

Yes – what you describe is the deal they had before the recession. What have they given up since the recession?

        • AppraisHer

@daves, “states are cutting services and charging fess for things the government provided free in the past”. Hey daves, a little lesson in economics 101… NOTHING IS FREE”, somebody’s got to pay for it. Taxes paid by working people to the government provided these services and those that never worked got them for “free”. I’ve worked 47 years to support generations of families that have never worked and are getting these things for “free”. Who appointed you the arbiter of fairness.

          • daves

Once again you are all missing the point completely.

It is not about people getting an equal share, it is about everyone chipping in a little.

    • Retired USAF MSgt

Give a person a fish – feed him for a day.
Teach that same person to fish – feed him for life!

Looked at in this light it’s obvious why the left doesn’t want to provide solutions.

Solutions equate to freedom and once free a person will need further justification to vote for you.

Having to justify to the voters why we should vote for them is too much like work for the left.

Don’t pick on the poor baby, that’s probably the best he can do, and expecting him to be literate just isn’t fair. Not at all.

He may well be daves’ illiterate brother.

But doesn’t fishing involve work? I mean they’d have to clean the fish and get their gear ready and all that which would take time from watching the tube and being a baby daddy with one of their many and varied “girlfriends”. Such high expectations for the congenitally lazy is just not fair.

For those liberals that believe in Darwinism, at this point the there is a devolving downward trend of the human species and the masses with low intelligence are being brainwashed into believing there is indeed a free lunch. It will implode when the burden on the world’s producing humans collapses under the weight of those demanding money and services paid for by the labor of others.

With Obama’s plan of redistribution of wealth, there is no need to go to school, no need to achieve anything, no need to aspire to greatness or incentive. Why work, don’t worry the federal government that has grown so powerful will take care of all citizens equally. Something has to be done to reelect a new president who is completely american, completely pro-growth.

  • Army CWO Retired

In the interest of Barry’s ‘fairness’, he announced at a prayer breakfast that he found something in the Bible he can use to justify taxing the heck out of the rich. Excuse me, but didn’t Liberals say the government can’t tell anyone what to do based on the Bible? Hmm? If this piece of crap is valid, doesn’t the Bible say that homosexuality is wrong? Shouldn’t Barry ban that too? Hmm? How does his new thinking square with telling Catholics their conscience doesn’t matter? HMM?

    • BobinPa.

The only thingGod talked about taxes in the Bible was God told the Israeli’s to pay 10%, which was known as tithing. Tell the Kenyan Mus-lim in the WH 10% sounds great and thats what the taxes should be. 10%. “Semper Fi”.

      • BobinPa.

Oh yeah, and that is 10% for EVERYBODY. There is 46% of the people in this country that pay 0, Zilch, diddly Squat, nothing, in taxes. That would stop. Everybody pays 10% period.

    • AZ Don

There you go again being reasonable. How will the liberal progressives ever understand what your saying?

      • Ladyliberty

I could hear Ronald Reagan saying that!!!

    • Shannon

I understand the point your making, however, I think Obama was only trying to relate to those who consider themselves religious, that spreading the money around in social programs is a good thing to do. He was just using it as an example. Is he going to use the Bible in every facet of law? No.

  • Larry E

Obama like all other liberals figures that if someone has worked for something and achieved it they should give it to someone who hasn’t ever worked for anything but wants it all. That’s fair according to the left.

It’s like Al Sharpton whining that “we” should have the same stuff in our houses that other people do (who’ve worked for a living). I’d like to have the stuff in my house that Al likely has in his, but haven’t conned enough people to have what he has. Oh, and I actually PAY my income taxes too unlike Al.

    • Another veteran

And the “Rev” Al Sharpton wouldn’t want what we have in our houses in his. He is too good for our mundane material things. I wish the media would interview him in his house and have camera capture what is under his roof. If the Black people really knew what Sharpton, Jackson and others of like ilk lived, they would revolt. These guys are living off others woes and doing very well in the process.

  • mark foster

What is fair about me working and the other guy not? Obama isn’t going to just take from the rich, he will take from every hard working man and woman that is working. Don’t be fooled, taxing the rich is only a distraction! I want to see his plan for more jobs in USA!!! Just look at the Keystone Pipeline? Shovel ready jobs, like momma used to say the proof is in the pudding!!!

    • http://PatriotUpdate Clinging to My Religion and My Guns

Oblamea’s plan to tax the “Rich” will only net him something like 300 Billion. By letting the Bush Tax Cuts expire, he will squeeze 6 Trillion (that’s with a “T”) from the Middle Class. So much for his dog crap agenda of “Fariness!” It is all bologna!

  • hldboo

I’m afraid that the battle at the ballot box will be stacked against the people. I’ve recently read that ACORN is up to its old tricks, but this time with the support of the DOJ.

    • AZ Don

Of course they are they were never shut down. Just changed the name. DOJ support goes without saying.

  • Shane

Obama’s wealth redistribution plan does have a lot of appeal to liberals, the lazy and incompetent. I do think that the GOP should not object to raising taxes on the wealthy in order to get a deal to reduce the national debt. Our $15 trillion national debt is the greatest problem facing our nation. Something must be done about the debt soon.

    • hldboo

The problem with raising taxes is that you get diminishing returns. At some point an increase in taxes will result in a decrease in net revenue. I don’t think anyone knows where that point is, but we must be pretty close.

  • J J

Where does the madness stop? At some point, the welfare state will not be able to sustain itself. I never did understand why the government ‘gives’ money in a welfare situation when they could just employ these people to fix our infrastructure that is falling apart. One way or the other, these people will be getting government money and if it is called a wage instead of welfare, at least something good would come out in the end – fixed roads, bridges, etc. Then these welfare people would not just be sitting at home doing nothing productive maybe spending the welfare money on drugs, alcohol, gambling, prostitution, etc.

  • Another veteran

Fairness and “everybody paying their fair share” is EVERYONE paying taxes including the poor. They vote on matters of taxation that affect taxpayers and benefit them. Plus they use the same roads, public buildings etc. that taxpayers paid for. It is not fair that a certain group of people are excluded from contributing to this country. What is it that makes them so exceptional as compared to the working class that pays taxes for the government to waste? Everyone should share in the ills of this country as well as the benefits. Obama is wrong!

  • Pegi

Obama wouldn’t know fairness if it fell on his head. What he thinks is fair is actually wealth distribution and that falls in the socialist column. Folks that have large incomes and already pay high taxes shouldn’t be forced to support folks that pay no income taxes. I fall in the lower middle class and don’t want a dime from the federal goverment and would be thrilled if they stayed out of my business. However I would be happy if they spent my taxes in a prudent way. Another veteran is 100% right!

  • Thomas Beckett

obama is orchestrating the new world order communist ponzi scheme. As more sheeple fall under his scheme of lies about unfairness, he will be able to take our guns, possessions and money away right under our noses. But something tells me God will intervene and obama will cease to be a worry.
