Republicans Should Be Embarrassed By Debt Increase Vote

Written on Thursday, August 4, 2011 by

Washington is obsessed by picking winners and losers. But the establishment media has the story all wrong again. The Republicans, they say won this skirmish over debt. But actually Republicans displayed a total lack of commitment to their principles.

The only winner in the “Budget Control Act of 2011″ is massive government and the Washington bureaucracy it feeds with your money.

We are embarrassed for Republican members of Congress who go out with a straight face and talk about how they controlled spending when they voted to increase the debt limit by between $2.1 and $2.4 trillion, the biggest explosion of debt in American history.

In reality, the bill as Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) points out, “allows the government to avoid spending reductions for the next two years while squandering our last best hope of averting a sovereign debt crisis.” This bill literally guarantees the economy will get worse, and the budget deficit will explode higher.

As a Republican State Senator in California, McClintock predicted, and fought against the policies that have bankrupted Sacramento and has now taken his crusade to Washington DC. He exhorted his colleagues to see reality, giving excellent reasons he voted against the Boehner/Obama bill: “The purported cuts, even if realized, are far below the $4 trillion deficit reduction that credit rating agencies have warned is necessary to preserve the Triple-A credit rating of the United States government; it blows the lid off the House budget passed in April by more than a half-trillion dollars over ten years; it makes no significant spending reductions for at least the next two years, essentially freezing spending at an unsustainable level.”

McClintock further explained, saying, “While the debt increase occurs this year, significant spending cuts aren’t to be made for many years and can be ignored or reversed by future acts of Congress; the spending caps are easily circumvented by declaring appropriations to be an emergency, a response to a ‘major disaster,’ or necessary for the ‘Global War on Terror'; and the balanced budget amendment provisions are illusory because the amendment is completely undefined.”

But even more damaging to Republicans is the way they handed their citizen mandated legislative power to Barack Obama, damaging the US Constitution in the process. Constitutional scholars Herb Titus and William Olson explained it this way: “Title III of the Act reads the ‘Debt Ceiling Disapproval Process.’ Under this title Congress has transferred to the President the power to ‘determine’ that the debt ceiling is too low, and that further borrowing is required to meet existing commitments, subject only to congressional ‘disapproval.’ For the first time in American history the power to borrow money on the credit of the United States has been disconnected from the power to raise revenue.”

The US Constitution’s Article I, Section 8, Clause 2 vests in Congress the power “to borrow Money on the credit of the United States.” Now these Republicans have handed their authority carte blanche to a President they say is unqualified to oversee the economy.

Ironically, “the markets” which Republican after Republican sighted as their reason for supporting this unconstitutional bill reacted badly. The Dow has rocketed lower, gold has moved higher, and clearly the markets aren’t following the script handed them by DC.

Readers of this column have been prepared. We predicted that Washington would be unsuccessful in their drive to “fix” the economy. What the economy needs is less, not more intervention from DC. Free markets work when they are “free.” Keynesian attempts to stimulate and regulate are killing progress and prolonging the economic woes.

Voters will take note that Republicans, when the chips were down, voted with Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner to keep the Washington merry-go-round humming.

The “old school”,”compromise” Republitards have to be fired! They caved-in to the liberals back in April on the 2011 budget negotiations and now they have caved-in to the spending increase.

Our only hope out of this mess is the TEA movement. We need to put a lot more of them into Congress AND THE WHITE HOUSE in the 2012 elections.

I was disappointed to see Allen West vote Yes on the budget, but I trust his decision. He is the only one who can beat Obama, and the only one I trust. As far as I am concerned I don’t trust any of them including the ones who voted Yes. Congressman West has integrity and he loves this country. We all really need to stick together. Please go to and vote for Allen West. If you need more re-assurance please go to: and watch some of his videos. He is a man that says what he means, and means what he says. Thank you, Bev

You’re absolutely right that they should be embarrassed. If it weren’t for the tea party members of Congress, it would have been even worse. Pathetic.

  • Jackie

They’re embarrassed and I’m pissed. Clearly, we Tea Partiers have a lot more rinos to remove and replace with Conservatives.

  • Patriot41

Right you are Floyd and on the money. The GOP leadership cannot say they were not warned or told to hold the line. Unfortunately they have not learned their lesson about listening to their constituents. The GOP establishment turned their backs on the conservatives in their party and in Congress and that says a lot about the establishment mentality of their leaders. It looks like 2012 will have to be the year a lot of old time GOP leaders will have to retire.

    • awakenow

Yes, indeed. We will need work hard to find real fiscal conservatives who will actually do what we elected them them to do … stop spending our country into oblivion.

If your Congress person voted for this nightmare then he/she must go in 2012, period. This is not the time to give them slack or credit for supposed maneuvers designed to recapture the Senate or the White House.

The reality of what has transpired, is that the GOP leadership brazenly sold us out … no matter their motives for voting to add trillions to our debt. We were played and used.

This is so disappointing and frustrating for me, as a Tea Party member, and someone who has worked really hard for the past two years to try to stop this madness. I am angry, too.

But now I truly understand how the two establishment parties work and that we are up against a formidable foe.

Still, this will stop me from calling, emailing, standing on street corners with signs and showing up at local town hall meetings and at their offices, especially while they are back home in my district.

I have a lot more work to do.

I agree. The least they could have done was this. Even a monkey could do this with his eyes closed in 24 hours. 99% of what we have representing us in DC are as worthless as boobs on a bore hog and that’s putting it politely

1). Cut all funding to the United Nations, get out of this organization entirely, and expel them from our soil. We must eradicate all domestic terrorist organizations such as this from our land once and forever. The United Nations is one of the United States worse enemies.

2). Cut all foreign aid to 192 countries that we currently fund who don’t even like of which most of them are filled with terrorist organizations who use our funding to buy arms used to kill our people by whatever means they fell is appropriate. Above all stay out of Africa at all cost no matter what the media implies. The Obamantor and his socialist followers are simply playing upon your compassion with showing of starving children on TV in hopes you’ll agree with using your tax dollar to save these people. Fact is, these tribes have been in this predicament for many decades and yet they continue to have litters of children as if they were a cat or dog, assuming no responsibility for their actions what so ever. Realistically they should be ashamed of themselves for bringing a child into their world at all.

    3) Cut all Social Security to those who have never paid their 40 quarters and stop all disability payments checks until each and everyone receiving these subsidies has once again proven they’ll qualified via a thorough medical examination and interview. It is not to be handed out to people just because they’re fat, obese, annelids or parasitic or on the dole due to pure laziness.

    4) Cut all funding for overseas military activity from all points in the world and get our troops out of every conflict we’re in. Use these troops stateside to eradicate all drug lords both foreign and domestic as well as all illegal aliens coming across our borders. Abolish EO12333 allowing us to surgical remove radical anti-American leaders from anywhere in the world without warning who are causing us grief of any kind, instead of going to war.

    5) Cut prison funding, making a prison what it should be, where prisoners have no rights, all luxuries are taken away immediately; increasing the occupancy of each cell to it maximum capacity with bunk beds stacked to the ceiling where they’ll get three meals a day of bread and water and work their asses off from sun up to sun down with the penalty for misbehavior of any kind the business end of a 12 gage shotgun where the deliverance of some lethal 00 buck shot will be the cure to this dilemma.

    6) Finally stop bullshitting around worrying about your re-election, public or world opinion and push the “reset button” on our nations deficit, whereby you simply inform all those who we’ve borrowed money from, we’re simply not making any more payments and they’re not getting anything in return. Think of this action as pay back for all the loans we’ve given you over the last 60 years that you’ve never paid back. We’re now, even. Have a good day and good night everyone. We don’t owe a damn dime to anyone for any reason and never will again. The national deficit is now $0.0 dollars.

    • In conjunction with all the above we must close all points of entry into the United States for the next 25 years while we deport all illegal aliens, Muslims and non US citizens immediately. Until we have secured our borders and eradicate these parasites, factions and all domestic terrorist on our soil, our national debt will continue to grow and America will continue to weather away in front of your eyes until we’re a third world nation fulfilling our Muslim’s dream.

    • The IRS is to be abolished immediate whereby a 10% flat tax will be paid by all regardless of income level and no write-offs for anything or for any reason. All other taxes currently employed will be eliminated. Here’s where 8% goes to the federal government and 2% goes to the state automatically withdrawn from each pay check or source of income, meaning there is no need to file state or federal income taxes again. The government must now run of a fixed income with the books to be balanced on Dec 31st of each year. No loans of any kind allowed again for any reason. They must pay cash or do without. As cashless society is absolutely necessary for this ideology so all income taxes are levied and no sale of any kind can take place without be recorded, means no matter how you make your money; when you buy any product of any kind, no matter how small, taxes are captured electronically. The hardware used for all transactions will incorporate a GPS satellite transponder gathering the location, date time stamp and photograph of the seller and recipient’s. So much for the pimp, pusher, drug market.

These are just a few cost savings task that need to be accomplished by midnight tonight 7-31-2011 and there’s NO excuse for not getting these done, except for pure stupidity and ignorance, which it appears we have tons of from Obama administration and all of its Socialist followers both foreign and domestic.

    Get it done dip-wits.

They go on a five week vacation right after this farce is passed? I think it sould be a permanent vacation for the entire lot of them. This includes whoever is left in DC…YOU DON’TNEED TO COME BACK!

  • rowley

Will the GOP become the Third party with the debt increase deal.

  • Tyrannosaurus Rex

Why? they are just good republicans doing what they do. They don’t get it at all, why anyone should be upset. You are the problem because you don’t understand how great they are. Shame on You!
