Robin Hood vs. the Occupiers

occupy robin hood

We have entered a new phase of the endless Occupy Wall Street sleepover. Not working is hard work. After a month of tying up the police, generating mounds of trash, railing against Jews while holding up “Nazi Bankers” signs, grappling with pervs, rapists and thieves in their ranks, communing with avowed communists, and hobnobbing with 1 percenter celebrities donning 99 percenter costumes (phew!), the Occupiers are rallying around a new mascot:

Robin Hood.

The crime-plagued Carnival of 1,001 Demands is now focused on one unified agenda item: a soak-the-rich tax on financial transactions worldwide. The corporate-bashing Canadian magazine “Adbusters” (funded by left-wing Wall Street trader Robert Halper) initiated the Occupy Wall Street siege last summer and published a new online manifesto this week explaining the call for an October 29 “Robin Hood march”:

“Across the globe the 99 percent are marching! … It’s now time to amp up the edgy theatrics … deviant pranks, subversive performances and playful detournements of all kinds.” There’s been no shortage of deviance, unfortunately, what with protesters defecating on police cars, urinating on each other’s tents, stealing food and phones, and exposing themselves to children. But I digress. As the movement “matures,” the leaders overseeing an unruly mob in Guido Fawkes masks exhorted the masses to “occupy the core of our global system.”

October 29 is the eve of the G20 Leaders Summit in France, you see, and that’s the date on which Adbusters wants its followers to “rise up and demand that our G20 leaders immediately impose a 1 percent ROBIN HOOD tax on all financial transactions and currency trades.” The money, say longtime champions of the tax, would go to “fund crucial action against climate change.” The Occupiers’ message? “We want you to slow down some of that $1.3 trillion easy money that’s sloshing around the global casino each day — enough cash to fund every social program and environmental initiative in the world.”

Say what? Panicked governments forked over trillions to rescue politically connected, basket-case banks, and the solution is … punishing individual investors, creating less efficient capital markets, and spreading the wealth around to global-warming zealots and welfare-state overlords?

Rest assured, the text of the Robin Hood tax manifesto will be chanted in ignorant zombie unison — using the “human microphone” method of call and drone — in dingy occupier camps from NYC to San Francisco and every blue dot in between. Showcasing their economic illiteracy, the Occupiers remain clueless about the real-world consequences of their redistributionist claptrap. And they’re ridiculously oblivious to the irony of adopting anti-tax crusader “Robin Hood” as their hero.

The ostensible intent of the anti-“greed” mob may be to reduce volatility in the market by punishing rapacious “banksters.” But the ultimate outcome would be less economic growth, bigger government and more punitive costs imposed on the decidedly non-rich. A European Union commission report on the impact of such a tax shows that it would reduce GDP by 0.5 percent. U.S. economist Kenneth Rogoff explained further in a recent analysis that “the declining volume of trades would shrink the tax base precipitously. As a result, the ultimate revenue gains are likely to prove disappointing, as Sweden discovered when it attempted to tax financial transactions two decades ago.”

The Association for Financial Markets in Europe found that 60 percent of trading volume in Sweden escaped to London after Sweden temporarily raised equity tax rates in the 1980s, and that the country experienced an 85 percent drop in bond trading volume, according to Financial News. The outcome was not simply less volatile trading. It was less trading, period.

The demon millionaires and billionaires whom the Occupiers seek to punish would not be the only ones to bear the costs. Over time, the burden of the Robin Hood tax would shift. Rogoff observed: “Higher transactions taxes increase the cost of capital, ultimately lowering investment. With a lower capital stock, output would trend downward, reducing government revenues and substantially offsetting the direct gain from the tax. In the long run, wages would fall, and ordinary workers would end up bearing a significant share of the cost.”

The original Robin Hood tales of the Middle Ages celebrated a renegade who rose up against property rights violations and taxation abuses. His archenemies were not private traders or bankers, but the local government tax collector, the Sheriff of Nottingham and the power-grabbing ruler, Prince John. Robin Hood, in other words, was far more tea party than flea party.

In any case, if the Occupiers insist on celebrating outright theft from the haves in the name of the have-nots, perhaps they should stop complaining about the pickpockets and looters infesting their camps. Live by “social justice” nursery rhymes. Die by “social justice” crimes.

It’s the typical steal from the rich and give to the poor to assure the parasite of this nation and the world get everything for nothing. It will not work simple because the government cannot give you anything it hasn’t taken away from someone else whereby eventually no one will have anything. BINGO, party over people.

    • neal

This is interesting. You guys seem to think that there is two kinds of economic sysytems. One, yours, seems to believe that everything goes. There is no need to moderate in anyway, the ability for a corporations to gain unlimited profits from those who are pawns in their games. Manipulating and weakening government by bribing politicians and using propaganda.
You are being used by those who have no empethy for you or anyone else.
Trust in G-d and not in the whims of the greedy…

    • Stephen Rowe

Neil, Greedy corporations? Unlimted profits? You apparently have no understanding of how the economy works. The problem is not the corporations who are owned by shareholders to whom any residual profits are distributed, but with government who has no Idea as to how to balance a budget. Take a course in economics.

    • Wolley Segap

Maybe you should check out who is helping the “rich” as you would call them. GE made $5 billion in profit last year and did not pay a dime in tax. Obama appointed Mr. Immelt (head of G E) to the debt reduction committee. Corruption at the highest level. Obama is not about to tax the “rich”. He and ows want to tax small business owners because they are the “rich” in his mind. Never mind that he bailed out the biggest banks in the world and let the small, local community banks go broke. Add another 1% tax and see what happens to the wrecked economy.

    • daves

I see in the near future a crisis approaching. It unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. The money powers prey upon the nation in times of adversity. It is more despotic than a monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, more selfish than bureaucracy. It denounces, as public enemies, all who question its methods or throw light upon its crimes. I have two great enemies, the Southern Army in front of me and the financial institutions at the rear, the latter is my greatest foe. Corporations have been enthroned, and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in the hands of a few, and the Republic is destroyed.
Abraham Lincoln, letter to William Elkins, Nov. 21, 1864. (After the passage of the debt causing National Bank Act [June 3, 1864]).

    • AppraisHer

nvrpc, Robin Hood took from the rich government (The Sheriff of Nottingham, the tax collector) and gave to the poor (the people who had been taxed to death by the government) or just the opposite of what these idiots think he did. I do, however love the fact that the “poor” Flea Partiers are stealing computers, blackberries and cell phones from the wealthy Partiers to keep for themselves. Great poetic justice there.

    • daves

In those days Government and Rich were synonymous. Now the Wealthy buy the politicians so they don’t look quite so evil to the people.

    • Hotnike

You got that right, nvrpc. But the lib’s are too dumb to realize it.

    • dr dave

Aside from the fact that, as pointed out in the article, that Robin Hood stole back from a corupt govt. what had wrongfully been taken from the people making the analogy more appropriate for Tea Party than Flea Party, the idea is ill conceived. If one looks at history, one will not find one program that successfully reduced poverty. On the contray, all weath redistribution plans have resulted in more poor people and only a slight decrease in rich people (unless the plan was like the French Revolution where the rich were murdered and again every one was poorer, not richer).

  • P

While you have everything about the Occupy Movement completely wrong and prove your website is either directly funded by the 1% or you are just ignorantly misinformed, I will go with what you are saying like it actually has facts. So it is better to steal from the poor to fund the rich? It is better to give Big Banks tax payer money than let them fix their own mistakes. Before the argument comes up about the banks paying us back make sure you know HOW they “paid us back.” Equity will not put American workers back to work, it will not put food on the table, and it will not put a roof over heads. Even GE paid us back with our own money (using government money to pay back the government). Apparently any time someone says something negative about billionaires they are called “anti semitic.” That type of name calling is extremely full of propaganda. You educate yourself on the OWS movement instead of spreading misinformation. OWS is not against getting rich, that is the American Dream after all. It is against the greediest of the rich. Sending our jobs over seas, laying off American workers to “make a bottom line,” paying less in taxes than those who make the first tax bracket, and paying off our politicians (and apparently you) to make sure laws are kept in a way that support their pockets and not the people’s pockets. OWS are not anti government, they are pro democracy. Pro TRUE democracy, where the people’s voice is heard. Would not expect you or anyone who reads your site to understand any of that. With all the propaganda and lack of transparency you seem to enforce.

P If you are so pissed off at the banks, why don’t you go camp out at the White House? obama is in bed with Wall Street and G.E…. We don’t like it any better than you do.

    • Patriot and an American

My math was wrong 100 people … 1.00 equals 1 cent

    • Patriot and an American

This is a reply tht I am going to enjoy speaking to … whether you be an illiterate or edcuated, your ideology, fits into an illiterate container, full of socialistic ideas (socialism has never worked successfully and someone has propagandized you into thinking it will, because you are not smart enough to know any better or you are waiting for your share of the richer peoples wealth, whereby when you split 1.00 between 100 people, you only get 10 cents, and the people multiply, your share of 10 gets smaller and smaller. Does that even make sense to you that you are fighting for an effort that minimizes your abilities, minimizes, your freedoms, your honor, your dignity, your surroundings, your parents, family, friends, any other of your connections will all be in the same boat. You can only put so many people in a boat, and then it sinks. That is what is going to happen with these occupy efforts, they are going to make the boat sink.

Yes we all want to put Americans back to work. The occupiers of our government has destroyed this American golden opportunity by shoving our companies to other countries. Do you think you should possibly occupy Washington, D.C., there is a supportive effort that ‘MAKES SENSE’. The elitists have been working on their efforts since 1910. A democratic senator from New York, 1910, Senator Aldridge, a former banking executive, wanted to be able to have his wealth, continue, mind you continue, within his own family for generations to come. That meant he need to do something to continue his wealth to amass to his family only, not you or anyone else. So he and several of his banker cronies went to Jekkyl Island and there the Federal Reserve was born. Do a web search on Jekkyl Island, and you will see the ploy of evil. Now that is just a beginning of the evil ploys that have continued, corruption that will continue in this present day and will excellerate in the future. Now, you are destroying your dignity and integrity for the likes of this evil. If you associate with evil, you, yourself are evil. The Devil insists that you do this for his sake, not for your sake. Lift yourself up and beyond the kind of uselessness and stand up like a person of dignity and integrity.

Just how many of Americans do you think are greedy. All human beings are greedy, due to human nature. But there are those that cling to power as the base of their greed. This then gives them the avenue to destroy, attract slaves, such as yourself, to do their dirty work and what do you think you will get as a result. Think about, what will be your net gain!

    • Jeff Smith

I couldn’t have said it better myself. I think it’s really a sad commentary on our society when one doesn’t educate themselves on the issues and then make a decision. It seems that the majority of these OWS folks are just following along like lost sheep not knowing what their real purpose is.

    • sid

its just a short swim to cuba!!!

    • Johnnygard

P, you make a comment about banks stealing from the poor. I’m (financially) poor so I’d sure notice if someone stole something from me. Corporations and banks only get my money when I give it to them, and I could stay home and not give them anything – it’s my choice. And did you forget it was Obama and the liberals that gave money to banks. That would be a Tea Party complaint, not OWS. You mention GE and sending jobs overseas. That again is Obama’s good friend, Jeffery Immelt. And Obama gives our tax money to unions and companies like Solyndra and they in turn donate to liberals. You should be a Tea Party person.

    • daves

      Well said P!

  • el_loco_jp

Robin Hood mainly stole confiscatory tax revenue from oppressive tax collectors and redistributed it to the taxpayers. If the OW deadbeats want a real Robin Hood, they should find someone who “steals” from Odummy and the IRS and gives to the taxpayers. However, that means the non-taxpaying parasites in the OW movement wouldn’t get anything.

    • Higgs

I’m glad someone finally “informed” the OWS people and supporters who Robin Hood really was and who he really was robbing. This analogy has been used before, incorrectly as always. Robin Hood stole from the greedy “tax collectors for the tyrannical government” of the times and gave it back to the poor “tax payers” that were being “squeezed” into poverty by said tax collectors. He didn’t steal from the “rich” in the way that these idiots want to apply to their cause. Not all on “Wall Street” are unethical or unlawful in their dealings; those that are get caught sooner or later. Once again, the culprit of our economy woes is our government and “Odumbdumb’s” policies. But, do we really believe these people are all “everyday regular Joe’s” that are made at Wall Street? Please! These are people that have been “recruited” and sent in all around the country to cause chaos and violence. They’re progressives, communist supporters, and socialists. They protest the very companies and people of those companies that have allowed them to have tents to sleep in, ipods and lap tops, etc., to communicate to one another and check out the “net,” and other technological pieces of equipment they’re using while occupying. HYPOCRITES!! THEY’RE ALL FAKES!!! BOUGHT AND PAID FOR!!!

  • Leonid

Right on Michelle! P(Maybe Peter or Paul?) has it all wrong. OWS movement is paid to organize a civil disobedience of people mostly kids of rich parents or unemployed on unemployment insurance. Who else can sit for a month in the park and do nothing? Farmers are trying to hire Americans instead of Mexicans and cannot find people willing to work. Get you buts off and go and do some productive work for a change! There are bad people (crooks) on WS? For sure there are some. Specifically when our government provides banks with free money and asks them to give people loans to buy houses they cannot afford. P – grow up. In order to fill people’s pockets – people should work. Some people in government and in banks who give and accept fiat money should go to jail. The protest is in a wrong place. They should be protesting across from the White House and Fanny May and not on Wall Street.

Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, living in luxury every day. A certain beggar, named Lazarus, was laid at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Yes, even the dogs came and licked his sores. It happened that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried. In Hades, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus at his bosom. He cried and said, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue! For I am in anguish in this flame.”

But Abraham said, “Son, remember that you, in your lifetime, received your good things, and Lazarus, in the same way, bad things. But now here he is comforted and you are in anguish. Besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that those who want to pass from here to you are not able, and that none may cross over from there to us.”

Michelle Malkin gets it! This is exactly what I thought after having watched the 1938 Warner Brothers film adaptation which starred Errol Flynn as Robin Hood and Claude Rains, Basil Rathbone, and Melville Cooper as his arch enemies Prince John, Sir Guy of Gisbourne, and the Sheriff of Nottingham. Too many people have twisted this story around, particularly numb-skulled Liberals who have made Obama out to be some sort of Robin Hood. As Malkin points out, if you pay close attention to the tale, you’ll see just what polar opposites Robin Hood and Barack Obama truly are.

  • Nonne

Robin Hood was originally “Robbing Hood” — that’s what he did and that’s what he was.

Actually, Robin Hood Was originally SIR Robin of Loxley. He became a ‘hood’ when he went against corrupt government officials and RETURNED that which was stolen from the ‘taxpayers’. Learn your legends, or stop using them.

I attended thhe Occupy Pittsburgh rally on Saturday as an observer. First, I must congratulate the organizers and demonstrators for their neatness and the exhuberant yet orderly manner in which they excercised their 1st Amendment rights. But I was a little confused by thier anti-corporation rhetoric. I saw ALF-Cio union members decrying greedy corporations. But can it also be said governments can be even worse , always greedy for more tax money and power? Aren’t these corporations the one who sign your checks and provide your benefits? I saw government workers whose income and benefits are primarily derived from taxes. We can understand their demand for more taxation. Higher taxes provide better wages and benefuits for those who work for the government. Yet, even there, we may concede that corporations may not provide enough tax revenue to the federal government, but they do provide state, proprty and school taxes. The Codex of the Federal register that contains all these loopholes, exemptions etc were enacted by a Senate comprised mainly of Democrats. Local corporate taxes are used by school districts to provide an education for students and lucrative wages and benefits for teachers. So why were there teachers trying to bite the hand that feeds them? Many of the workers who railed against corporations are looking forward to retirement. But their retirement is based upon stock performance of corporations. Many of the protestors were students, complaining about student loans. Yet it is the liberal universities who keep raising tuition annd and giving six figure salaries to their profressors. The banks did not overcharge you for a degree, the progressive innstitutes of higher learning did. You protestors rightfully railed against the FED, corporate bail outs and the fact that the US Treasury is now a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs. But in a few months you will be supporting the President and Democratic politicians who made these decisions. So other than the few Marxis, Trotsky-ite socialist whomarched in solidarity with you because they want total power and control, why were so many protesting?
Be careful you don;t kill the goose that lays the golden egg with over taxation and regulation. for if you destroy the corporations with what will you replace them?
    Michael Guy

  • Sthumpich

The correct name for this ridiculous mess is OBAMA WALL STREET SLEEPOVER!

  • AZ Don

Robin Hood? Sounds like they are after something more like Jessie James. Steal from someone who has improved their living standard and give it to someone who refuses to put forth the effort to improved their own. At least that is what obama is promoting with his wealth redistribution.

If somehow these people were to get into power than there would be a need for a Robin Hood because of an oppressive government. There is a difference however between an oppressive government and a freeloader population. Our obvious problem however is, they are part way there now with our current president and administration.

The interesting question is, who are these people who are demonstrating? Are they a spin off of the weather underground? Are they just misplaced disgruntled college students. Why is it suddenly acceptable to promote totalitarianism socialism, or communism and marxism in America? There has to be a source of motivation for these people.

Any one who ignores this problem or condones it is, it seems to me, guilty of treason. These acts do seem to be an effort to overthrow our constitutional government.

Is this what Van Jones was calling for when he said “top down, bottom up and inside out?” He did call for people to get in the streets. It seems we have a very serious problem on our hands. One that will not be solved unless or until we get rid of the current corrupt administration in Washington!

It appears the threat of losing reelection has made it necessary for this administration to speed up the take over. Furthermore, make no mistake, if that is true, a civil war is coming and even sooner than expected.

Taking from the rich won’t cure our problems. Getting rid of Obama would be a good start though. It’s amazing that any protestor would be saying take from the rich when there are rich people financing some of the protests. Also some of the rich celebraties are helping out financially. Isn’t that taking money from the rich when they are helping you have food and tents and water so you can sit around for days on end doing nothing more than playing cards or just socializing with you neighbors?
