The Drudge Distort

You’re being manipulated. A well respected, highly influential news source has cast aside all journalistic integrity to shill for the liberal, GOP establishment candidate in this presidential race.

The New York Times, you say? MSNBC? The Washington Post? No. We all gave up on those “progressive” rags a long time ago.

Regrettably, the latest media outlet to assume a decidedly yellow hue during this heated primary cycle is the Drudge Report. It pains me to even write this. Drudge has always been both my first and last internet news stops of the day.

It’s often said, “Never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel.” Well, Drudge deals in pixels instead of ink, but the same principle applies.

Still, this is a fight worth having.

In past years, Matt Drudge has done a fair job of playing it down the middle during presidential primaries. Not this time. In the game of “Washington insider hold ‘em,” the Drudge Report is “all in” for Willard Mitt Romney. It’s not even subtle.

As the Politico reports: “Newt Gingrich better hope voters who lapped up his delicious hits on the ‘elite media’ and liberals don’t read the Drudge Report this morning … If they do, Gingrich comes off looking like a dangerous, anti-Reagan, Clintonian fraud.”

This, of course, is utter pablum. Gingrich is the last Reagan conservative standing in this race; or, as the venerable Nancy Reagan said of “the distinguished speaker, Newt Gingrich” in 1995: “The dramatic [conservative] movement of 1995 is an outgrowth of a much earlier crusade that goes back half a century. Barry Goldwater handed the torch to Ronnie, and in turn Ronnie turned that torch over to Newt and the Republican members of Congress to keep that dream alive.”

To this day, Newt Gingrich is keeping that conservative dream alive and that Reagan torch aflame. America is beginning to get this, and it has the “Republican in Name Only” (RINO) establishment tied in knots.

Politico summarizes Drudge’s hit job on Gingrich: “The overnight Drudge Report banner: ‘Insider: Gingrich repeatedly Insulted Reagan.’ The headline linked to a devastating takedown by Elliott Abrams in the National Review, who wrote, among other things, that Gingrich had a long record of criticizing and undermining Reagan’s most transformative policies.”

Baloney. Sorry, Matt Drudge, but Mrs. Reagan’s vote of confidence carries considerably more weight than your shameless smear on behalf of the Massachusetts moderate.

Cherry picked quotes, biased headlines and hyperlinks to Newt-hating op-eds in order to patch together an ugly and distorted mosaic of the former House speaker is not journalism. It’s mercenary-style political prostitution.

At the top of Thursday’s Drudge was linked an opinion piece by another Romney surrogate, Ann Coulter, headlined “Re-elect Obama: Vote Newt!” In it, she skewers Mr. Gingrich and claims, “Romney is the most electable candidate.”

Odd when you consider that, less than one year ago, Coulter told a packed house at CPAC the exact opposite: “If you don’t run Chris Christie, Romney will be the nominee and we’ll lose,” she said. “By the way, I warned you about McCain.” (I don’t know, maybe Ann’s now angling for a gig as Romney’s Secretary of Snark. Look for her next book: “Moderate: An Autobiography.”)

But Coulter’s exactly right about that whole McCain thing. He recently endorsed Romney too. So did Bob Dole. Interesting. And they’re both vehemently opposed to a Gingrich nomination as well.

See where this is going? What do Bob Dole and John McCain have in common? Is this really who we think is going to unseat Barack Obama? Mitt Romney: the ideo-political love child – figuratively speaking – of Bob Dole and John McCain?

The RINO is a slow, lumbering beast. It is foolishly and predictably drawn, over and again, toward that “moderate” watering hole. There, it hopes to attract that equally perplexing animal, the “independent.” From this liaison, it is believed a bevy of voting offspring will be produced.

Never happens. In fact, the mushy middle is exactly where that fierce predator – The Democrat – wants its Republican prey corralled. Ever seen Wild Kingdom? Not pretty.

RINO Republicans and liberal Democrats have something in common: they both mistakenly assert that conservative candidates are unelectable. Ronald Reagan proved them wrong and so will Newt Gingrich.

No, I’ve got news for Matt Drudge, Ann Coulter and the rest of the establishment GOP: As 2010 proved and as I believe 2012 will show again, conservatives don’t shine to being told who our nominee is going to be.

We’ll pick him ourselves, thank you very much.

    HAHAHAHAHAH!
Newt was the epitome of “establishment”… the reason nobody likes him – is because they all know him! Newt is the worst candidate left… the debates in Florida are proving that “the emperor has no clothes”.
Newt is an example of “there is no there there”…
I could go on. This article is ridiculous. These people are well respected conservatives, and what they say about Newt is firsthand information.

    • daves

#13 Newt Gingrich is a firm believer in the job-killing “free trade” agenda of the globalists. Newt Gingrich voted for NAFTA and he is a staunch supporter of the WTO. He once made the following statement on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives….

“What we’re being told is that free trade with Mexico would devastate the U.S. economy. With its low wages, Mexico would unleash a flood of cheap imports into our markets. There would be a mass exodus of U.S. factory jobs, as hordes of American companies fled across the border…. All this is scare talk.”

      • Dntmkmecmoverther

@daves: it wouldn’t have been so ‘job killing’ if our lovely unions would have looked at the world market and made wise adjustments. But NO, they went to the trough like pigs. And like pigs they went to slaughter. Newt was right then and now: we are part of a global market whether we like it or realize it, or not. WE better wake up and make the adjustments while we still have an economy!

        • lilbear68

if our unions were so greedy then pray tell us all how the german auto workers union manage to get $63.00/hr for their workers but at a vw plant here in the USA the avg uaw worker only gets between $15.00-20.00/hr

          • el_loco_jp

They automated. Hence, fewer union “workers”.

          • Evan

The pay Germans for producing quality vehicles. They pay union workers for showing up.
Think you need to change your name slightly. How about “lilpussy68″?

          • Evan

The pay Germans for producing quality vehicles. They pay union workers for showing up.

(In case my first one didn’t make it past the moderator.)

          • http://patriotupdate FIREBUG

@ Liberal68 you are totaly wrong, when it comes, to the union auto makers wages, I too belived, like you, that the assembly line workers were making around $15.OO or $ 20.00 per hr wages but I almost fell off my chair when I learned, they come up to around $ 150.000.oo+ dollars per yr. why do you think the value of an avrage car is no less than $ 18,ooo. price tag and pick ups can easly run into the $ 30,000.00+ to over $ 50,000.00 that is why only car maker emplyees, white collar managers and profesionals can affort a new automobile every 3 or 4 yrs, while back in the sixtys an avrage worker could get a new car at least every 5 yrs.unions the only thing they do is increase the value of whatever they manufacture, in order to pay all the benefits due and retirments, that unions negociate, but not only afects, the car industry but even food ,clothing rents etc. gets afected when a manufactaure corporation, that has union wages, every thing around the factory increases, rents, and prce of homes also increase.unions ,insurance companys are like banks they never lose they use other peoples money to screw every one else.those are invisible governments, that financialy brake the backs, and don’t give anything in return.

    • Dntmkmecmoverther

@paul; no you needn’t go on..thank god. Newt is the only genuine conservative who can stop this proverbial kicking of the can down the same stupid road. You better get a pair of ears and eyes so you can see what’s going on Paul. Stop buying into the idiocy being spewed out by the media and the Republican elitists who deny anything wrong within the party. Newt will neuter these idiots once he’s in office.

Romney is not getting my vote. I won’t vote for another R I N O! Newt will get my vote or I will write him in.

    • R

Newt is a RINO times ten. Look at his record:

      Newt Gingrich record:

4-2-1987 – Cosponsored the 1987 Reenactment of the Fairness Doctrine.

11-19-1993 – Voted for the NAFTA Implementation Act !

11-27-1994 – Supported the GATT Treaty giving sovereignty to the U.N.

3-15-2011 – Said that NAFTA worked because it created jobs in Mexico !

3-19-2011 – Has no regrets about supporting Medicare drug
coverage. Now $7.2T unfunded liability !

4-25-1996 – Voted for the single largest increase on Federal
      education spending, $3.5 Billion !

6-1-1996 – Helped a Democrat switch parties in an attempt
to defeat constitutionalist Ron Paul in the 1996 election.

2-15-2007 – Supported Bush’s proposal for mandatory carbon caps.

10-1-2008 – Says in an article that TARP was a “workout, not a bailout.”

Can you tell us why Gingrich went along with Dems-liberals-RINO’s, allowing Clinton’s mass-illegal-alien amnesty bills to pass ?

Newt was House Speaker during 3 of Clinton’s 6 mass-illegal-alien amnesties, 2 million of 5 million total !

      1997 Sec 245-i Extended 1994 rolling amnesty.

1997 Nicaraguan Adjustment Central American Relief Act Amnesty, NASCARA, 1-million Central American illegal aliens.

1998 Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act Amnesty, 125,000 Hatian illegal aliens.

These mass-illegal-alien-amnesty-bills faiied to pass many times, they finally passed by adding them as amendments to “unrelated major bills.”

All of you who won’t vote for a particular candidate for POTUS, for any reason will be re-electing obama.
As soon as the primary in my State is over I am registering with either The Constitution Party or as an Independent, since the few candidates that I did like have dropped out.
And, if obama gets re-elected then this will be the last time i vote because you have to be registered here as either D. or R. in order to vote locally or nationally.

    • el_loco_jp

Listen! Petulant voting will only ensure Odumbo’s reelection. Hold your nose and vote for the GOP candidate, whoever it is. If it’s a RINO, we’ll deal with him after. Anybody but BHO.

  • IdahoConservativeRedneck

By the way, why does this site moderate every single post I do? Isn’t that like Drudge saying who he is pulling for? I may not be visiting here much longer.

    Matt,
Excellent piece and directly on target points. It is wonderful that I am not the only one who see’s this!
See this article I wrote that supports exactly what you stated:

Newt is our only hope of turning this country around and the only reason he is not liked by the old gaurd is that he did not necessarial go along with them when he was speaker of the house. Newt has alway been for the people.

    • Gerald

Newt has always been for Newt. Period.

  • Joann Parker

Right on, We need Newt, He can get things done and doesn’t need a coach

    • Martin Ridens

But he does need a babysitter.

Atty. Matt Barber, VP, Liberty Council – you are spot on. When I went to Drudge this morning I picked up on the same – the first place I search for over-night news is Drudge too – but, sad to say they have jumped on the establishment’s candidate Romney. In my opinion Newt Gingrich has the best grasp of local; national and world-wide issues of any of the candidates – period. “We the people” would do well to elect him as our next POTUS.

  • Bren in VA

Thats why the T E A Party rose up so QUICK & Strong! Us regular folks, like to think for our selves!

    • el_loco_jp

If we can just Odumbo out of the White House (and into GITMO) we’ll have 2-4 years to develop and build the Tea Party and ensure that there will never be another president like Odippy.

  • Moose

Finally someone who understands. RINOs are so concerned about the independent voter that they don’t see they could lose the Conservative (Blue) states.

  • flash287

Newt is a politician. He says only what get him votes. He wants a space station on the moon? He has no idea about economics. He hates Ryan’s budget plan? He called it “right wing social engineering” Newt is a loose cannon.

Donlt lose sight of the coming election. We don’t want the one most conservative…we want the one that can beat Obama. Romney can because he will appeal to the Independents. And I personally know people that voted for Obama and Democrats generally for decades. They will vote only for Romney amongst Republicans because Newt is too blatant about the social issues. republicans can;t win on that. Look at Santorum. He is smart but to heavily invested in SOCIAL ISSUES. So he, like Bachman and Perry can’t gain traction from the broad voting base. It’s the Independents that will decide this election. Not Democrats nor Republicans.
    What don’t you understand?

If he wins the nomination I will vote for him. Only because I can’t take the Liberal ECO loving democrats anymore. I go further, I would vote for Mickey Mouse on the Democrat ticket if can successfully take down the EPA and their economy destroying GREEN lying agenda. Cheap energy is the only issue. Everything else gets fixed wit $1 gas again.

    • Micky

The only way to win the Presidential Election is to get the CONSERVATIVES TO VOTE, who stayed home because of McCain’s fake conservativism! THEY CAN’T FAKE IT!

      • Ole Vet

Even ‘fake’ Conservatism is better than what we have now, effective Socialism! Charges, true or not, broadcast about the ‘unfit’ other candidates is just more grist for the mill of Demoncraps! They are carefully noting each and every charge and denial and will use them when push comes to shove in the final Presidential voting! Some candidates were content to go only positive until attacked by the others, then off came the gloves! It didn’t help to find otherwise valued and trusted trusted political sources, who SHOULD BE UNBIASED, offering their own formed opinions, and sometimes, fabricated ‘facts’ and stories, for their viewers/readers as veritable truth! To top it all off, some of the conservatives are of the opinion that if ‘their’ candidate is not in the race, they will just stay home and NOT vote! This is an ABSOLUTE GUARANTEE that Ozero will be re-elected, and have 4 full years to complete his plan for the ruination of America!
Republicans! As the separated snake parts (the individual colonies’ names) flag of the Revolutionary war was labeled, “Unite or Die”! Mark my words, people!

        • el_loco_jp

          I like your term “Ozero”.

  • singer23

When Conservatives can’t trust Conservatives, it’s time to give up! The elite Conservatives are against the, “Everyday Conservatives!” The likes of Ann Coulter Pseudo Conservative, is spewing her elitist garbage on Newt because she’s thrown her lot with, “Tonner Christie!” It looks as though she’s lusting after his, “Enormous Body!” “Fat And Skinny, Had A Race, All Around The Pillow Case, Fat Fall Down And Broke His Crown and skinny Won The Race!” Watch out Ann!

    • LocalYokel

Have you already forgotten the most memorable suggestion to ever have arisen from Alaska, “Don’t retreat, Reload?? When the Media’s Pied Piper effect shows diminishing returns.they simply avoid all news that voters really need for critical decisions at hand and strive to divide independent patriots with yet another charade of their televised political drama devised from the scraps of their failing current episode of “electability fear.” Both conservative and liberal are mere media created peer pressure terms engineered to dilute the only group that counts—PATRIOTS!! Patriots are independent by nature and most feared when the agenda of media / party drama is becoming openly obvious to those formerly following their Pied Piper of Poop to voting booths with heads totally void of facts.
Watching an hour of “The New Turks” revealed maximum concern over the tax documents of leading GOP candidates without even a mention of Obama’s refusal to be subpoenaed to court in Atlanta with documents necessary for defense to ineligibility charges brought by numerous Georgia voters and potential candidates. Fox is presently showing concern that the president needs “time alone”. Guessed they missed all the international vacation and time on the golf links, huh?
The tune played by the Media Piper, even with all its cheesy drama should be getting stale to all that have internet search accessibility and genuine concern for the future of their progeny. Neither is encouraged by either media or party.

I was a former Fox/Drudge junkie. No more; their obvious biases toward Romney and their lack of integrity with regard to Newt are more than enough to end my addiction.

  • Ferrarello

I disagree….Drudge sends a lot of traffic to anti-establishment candidate sites. Alex Jone’s site is one of them. 8)
