The battles that have been waged for decades over public school curriculums and academic freedom on college campuses are not just about education. In fact, education is just a side issue. Rather, they are battles in a much larger war being conducted against conservatives by the American left. One of the most effective battlegrounds of the left has been the college campus. It is a widely-acknowledged fact that the majority (70 + percent) of college professors identify themselves as being liberal or very liberal. In fact, for a college professor to be viewed as a liberal is a badge of honor. For college professors to be conservative makes them not just rare but unwelcome on college campuses.
College professors are smart people, although they are not necessarily wise. Consequently, liberal professors have become quite adept at using their numerical and positional advantages to suppress thinking that violates leftist orthodoxy. Ironically, the tactics they use to conduct their on-going culture war violate the very principles liberals claim to believe in and live by. They also violate the principles of free speech, free thought, and free inquiry supposedly protected by academic freedom, the philosophical cornerstone of higher education in America.
In an article entitled “Diversity Dishonesty on College Campuses,” Phyllis Schlafly wrote: “Diversity, multiculturalism, tolerance, and political correctness are the watchwords in colleges and universities today. The campus thought police have defined those words to enforce the liberal leftwing agenda. Diversity means diversity only for thoughts and practices that are politically correct. Political correctness means conformity to leftwing orthodoxy. Multiculturalism means all cultures are equal but Western Judeo-Christian civilization is the worst. Tolerance means acceptance of all behaviors except those that comport with the Ten Commandments.”
David Horowitz comments on the tactics employed by the left in conducting its war on conservatives in an article entitled, “The Surreal World of the Progressive Left.” In this article Horowitz wrote: “It is not for nothing that George Orwell had to invent terms like ‘double-think’ and ‘double-speak’ to describe the universe totalitarians created. Those who have watched the left as long as I have understand the impossible task that progressives confront in conducting their crusades. Rhetorically, they are passionate proponents of ‘equality’ but in practice they are committed enthusiasts of a hierarchy of privilege in which the highest ranks are reserved for themselves as the guardians of righteousness, then for those they designate ‘victims’ and ‘oppressed,’ who are thus worthy of their redemption. Rhetorically they are secularists and avatars of tolerance, but in fact they are religious fanatics who regard their opponents as sinners and miscreants and agents of civil darkness. Therefore, when they engage an opponent it is rarely to examine and refute his argument but rather to destroy the bearer of the argument and remove him from the plain of battle.”
The most effective weapon in the arsenal of the radical left is the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), an organization that has been instrumental in conducting the culture war against conservatives. This is what the Alliance Defense Fund says about the ACLU and its efforts in this war: “For more than 50 years, the ACLU and other radical activist groups have attempted to eliminate public expression of our nation’s faith and heritage. They have done this through fear, intimidation, misinformation, and the filing of lawsuits (or threats of lawsuits) that would: eliminate Christian and historic faith symbols from government documents, buildings, and monuments; ban public prayer in schools and at school functions; deny Christians the right to use public facilities that are open to other groups; and prevent Christians from expressing their faith in the workplace.” These tactics succeed mainly because liberals dominate critical institutions such as education, the courts, and the media and use this dominance to their advantage in waging a cultural war against conservatives and Christians.
