Many Americans were profoundly shocked by the Chief Justice’s recent betrayal of his oath, of our Constitution, and of our nation; and by his capitulation to the forces of totalitarian socialism whose interests he served by that betrayal. (Shades of Benedict Arnold, a man who for five years had been a courageous American hero.) To put matters in perspective, however, we must remember that every branch of the Federal Government has been noted for exceeding – and betraying — Constitutional powers and obligations for over a century at least. This was a nation founded on biblical principles – yet peopled and governed by fallen men.
Paul was in prison in Rome, facing trial which could lead to his execution. He longed to be in heaven with Christ. But he thought that the Lord would keep him here a little longer to build up and multiply His churches. He wrote his dear friends in Philippi: “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you, or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruct- ion, but of your salvation, and that from God.”
Why should they not be frightened of the dictator of an empire? Of a Marxist and/or Muslin President and his czars? Of the giant financial powers that place, shield, and keep such men in office –whether in Rome or America, in Paris or in London, in Russia or China? Why not be frightened by them and their legions, their Gestapo, their Brown Shirts and Security forces?
Because the Lord God Who created the universe and governs all its affairs is the Covenant God of Israel! He is the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob. He is the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Incarnation of the Eternal Son. This is the God Who has called us to Himself by His Spirit; Who has given us faith in the Messiah Who has come; Who defeated satan and death, made full atonement for sin, inaugurated His Kingdom on earth and now moves through earthly time casting down principalities and proving His power in conversions, healings, deliverances, and mighty movements of faith and justice throughout centuries of human life on earth.
That Kingdom – never perfect, but often visible and very real – seems now almost absent in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Once so powerfully vigorous in North America, many churches claiming to belong to that Kingdom seem now so shallow, so frivolous, drunk with entertainment and immorality. But in China, in sub-Sahara Africa, and in Latin America the Kingdom has exploded in life and joy and power in the lives of many millions of people. And there are multitudes in our country still who live by God’s gospel and power in the life given by His Spirit.
The God of this Kingdom is the God Who rules all that exists. This is the God we love with godly fear. Fearing Him, how can we fear creatures of dust who vanish – many destined for hell?
Let God’s enemies see that we do not fear their gods! We do not fear their lies, their betrayals, their schemes, their “world orders.” Should the people who remember the Tower of Babel fear the UN, the Ford Foundation, Goldman Sachs? We remember Babylon, Persia, and Assyria. Where are those powers today?
Let us love and fear the Living God. By our trust in – and our visible obedience and witness to Him – multitudes of lost souls may also be delivered from the worship of satan and his surrogate powers on earth. Paul calls his dear friends in Philippi – and, through Paul, God calls us – to fear Him. To trust Him. To praise and obey Him. To reorder our lives, our homes, our customs, our morals and mores in order to reflect Him: not reflect the world, but reflect Him.
The enemies of God are puzzled by such people, people who do not fear their gods. It was said often in the 17th century of Calvinists that “they feared neither man nor king because they fear God.” Those opposing this God are heading for destruction. Those serving the Living God enjoy salvation. For they serve the God Who came and will bring righteousness to earth in the affairs of men
We who are Christ’s are called by God work hard for righteousness, for truth, for integrity, for biblical justice in all the institutions on earth. We must be busy at that task as privileged citizens who can vote. But let’s keep it all in God’s perspective.
Let’s do what God says through Paul – shout praises to this Great God, and get to work! For truth. For righteousness.
“For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea!” Isaiah 11:9
God bless you.
