Patriot Update

For as long as I can remember, one of my favorite sweet treats has been Girl Scout cookies.  For years I looked forward to the annual cookie drive when nice little girls in brown uniforms would peddle their sugary treats door to door, usually accompanied by harried but smiling moms. But all that has changed. I no longer buy Girl Scout cookies. Is this because at 62 I can no longer afford the extra calories?  No, I still eat plenty of cookies—just not the Girl Scouts brand.  Is it because as a retiree my budget no longer has room in it for cookies?  No, in spite of the economic realities of retirement there is always room in my budget for cookies. The reason I no longer buy Girl Scout cookies is that the Girl Scout’s national organization has adopted a leftwing political agenda and become an instrument of Planned Parenthood.

In fact, the little cookie-bearing girl who knocks on your door this year might not even be a girl.  In what might be the ultimate statement of leftist politics, the Girl Scouts now admit boys who cross dress as girls.  To add insult to injury, most of the money raised by the Girl Scouts in your local neighborhood goes not to them or to support their activities, but to the Girl Scouts bureaucracy to support its leftwing political agenda.

Cathy Cleve Ruse has investigated the inner workings of the Girl Scouts and published what she learned in The Washington Post.  What she found is shocking.  For example, the media relations officer for the Girl Scouts national organization is none other than Joshua Ackley.  Here is what Ruse had to say about Ackley: “Ten years ago…Joshua Ackley was the frontman for the ‘homopunk’ band the Dead Betties.  In publicity shots, he’s dressed in women’s clothing, and in music videos, he appears to be naked and feigning masturbation.  His video for ‘Hellevator’ portrays a woman being strangled in an elevator shaft while Mr. Ackley flashes a menacing grin.”  Nice guy.  Just kind of role model we need for little girls.

In a “no adults allowed” workshop for the Girl Scouts held at—where else—the United Nations, Mr. Ackley facilitated a session based on Planned Parenthood’s sex brochure “Healthy, Happy, and Hot.”  According to Ruse, page 11 of this brochure contains the following advice: “Some people have sex when they have been drinking alcohol or using drugs.  This is your choice.”  No wonder no adults were allowed in the room.  Shame on parents for turning their impressionable little girls over to the likes of Ackley and Planned Parenthood.

Ruse tells the story of a young Girl Scout employee, Renise Rodriguez, who came into the office on her own time to do some extra work but was told to leave by an angry supervisor.  Her offense?  Rodriguez was wearing a T- Shirt with an inscription that read “Pray to End Abortion.” Perhaps had she worn a shirt that said “Let’s Get Drunk, Take Drugs, and Have Sex” Rodriguez would still be a Girl Scout employee.  This brief article only touches the surface of the leftwing shenanigans of the Girl Scouts organization.  For a more thorough treatment of how far this once commendable organization has fallen, go to www.100questionsforthegirlscouts.org.
