House Speaker John Boehner will lay out a debt ceiling increase proposal as House Republicans meet with President Barack Obama at the White House Thursday.
Boehner is calling on Obama to negotiate the reopening of the federal government in an effort to go forward with the debt ceiling proposal.
“It’s time for leadership,” Boehner said. “It’s time for these negotiations and this conversation to begin.”
GOP aides tell CBS News that Boehner will present a “clean” bill to Obama that is free of any policy conditions which would raise the borrowing limit for six weeks to allow for more negotiations.
“I don’t want to put anything on the table, I don’t want to take anything off the table,” Boehner said about negotiating with the president.
Boehner hopes Obama accepts the proposal as a “good faith effort” and for the president to meet Republicans halfway to end the government shutdown.
