“Most Americans expect the government to protect them,” and the USA Patriot Act — including a provision that allows bulk collection of Americans’ telephone records by the federal government — is an important way of doing that, CIA Director John Brennan told CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday.
Brennan spoke before the law expired at midnght on Sunday.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a presidential contender and privacy advocate, objects to the collection of metadata on constitutional grounds, and in a rare Sunday session, he blocked consideration of a bill that would make changes to the expiring law.
