“We as a people have declared independence from God, we need to get back to a dependence on God. When a nation turns their back on God, that nation begins to spiral out of control and it deifies man and forgets God.” –Pastor Bob Sauser

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to tell that America has turned its back on God. The moral decay, the corruption in politics, and the lack of prosperity…it all adds up. God wants to bless us, however, we deny Him the ability to bless us as a nation because He is just. God cannot and will not bless evildoing; it goes against His very nature. Just look at Israel, God’s own chosen people. When Israel has turned their back on God, He temporarily has removed His hand of blessing from them. However, He has made Israel a promise and has fulfilled it all of these generations by never allowing them to cease as a nation. America doesn’t have that same promise. If you study the book of Revelation, Western civilization is nowhere to be found.

The evidence all around us proves that we have declared our independence from God. Our founders did the opposite. They declared full dependence upon Him as Benjamin Franklin said, “I have lived, Sir, a long time; and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this Truth, that God governs in the Affairs of Men. And if a Sparrow cannot fall to the Ground without his Notice, is it probable that an Empire can rise without his Aid?” Upon declaring dependence, America flourished and prospered as a nation.

Revisionist writers have changed the history books in attempt to negate the fact that America was founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs. Many of our founders were believers and their lives reflected such a belief. The few founders who were not believers at least had a great fear and a reverence for Almighty God. While many politicians today believe in God, they aren’t as apt to admit it due to political correctness. Can you imagine what the realm of politics in our day and age would look like if our politicians had a reverence and fear of God? We certainly wouldn’t be in this mess if that were the case!

“And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep for ever.” –Thomas Jefferson

My pastor, Bob Sauser, also stated, “A life lived on conviction will always run up against opposition.” How true. Americans have left their first love and our consciences have been seared to the point of not having the ability to sense the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Our rights and freedoms come from God. We have the freedom to do as we like up to a certain point. God has established laws and when we cross the line of disobedience that violates His laws, we cannot hide from His watchful eye, nor can we escape the temporal judgment.

While God is just and holy, He is also faithful to keep His promises. He promises in 1 John 1: 9 “…he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” It may be too late to save America as a whole, but that doesn’t mean that we should give up trying. It starts with you and me. By our example, may others come to see that a life lived set-apart from the culture of this world will reap the most amazing blessings. These blessings may not be material blessings, but rather, spiritual blessings.

I’m thankful that God doesn’t judge us as He did Ananias and Sapphira for lying (in Acts 5). The world would be empty because we all sin and we do suffer temporal judgment…just not instantaneous death! By God’s love and grace, He sent His Son, Jesus, as a sacrifice to take our place. Jesus bore the punishment of our sins upon Him and paid the price. We are no longer dammed to hell due to our sin, but rather, due to our lack of belief. Christ has offered us a free gift of eternal salvation, all we have to do is believe on Jesus Christ for everlasting life as stated over and over in the Gospel of John.

America is special, she is beyond exceptional. America was made that way because we founded our country on a firm foundation…God. As the world around us continues to decay, America would do well to once again declare our dependence on our Creator.
