This past summer, a great controversy over same sex marriage arose due to remarks made by Chick-Fil-A CEO, Dan Cathy. He said in an interview, “We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit.” Cathy said. “We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.”
Cathy’s comments immediately set the gay rights organizations into high gear and the protests and media attacks began. Mike Huckabee had Truett Cathy on his television program in July and announced that August 1st was to be Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day. We all remember the great support the company received that week. I know I ate there four times.
Today, only a few weeks after the August 1st event when millions of people around the country joined together to support the Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day, a new twist to the story is now developing. It appears there is change in the air.
Has a retreat been sounded by the famous Christian based company? Was the pressure from gay rights groups and political power centers too much to bear? Is this a moral decision, a legal decision, or a bottom line decision? We don’t know yet.
USA Today and other mainstream (pronounced left wing) media outlets are pouncing on the news that Chick-Fil-A may be reevaluating its moral stances, especially regarding homosexuality. For some unknown reason the press was not as excited about the overwhelming support of Chick-Fil-A on August 1st.
So far, the Christian company has decided to quit supporting organizations that are “anti-gay.” This happens after a Chicago Alderman Proco Joe Mareno and others were trying to block the opening of a Chick-Fil-A store on Chicago’s Northwest side.
The Dallas News reported today, “Chick-fil-A will no longer donate money to anti-gay groups or discuss hot-button political issues after an executive’s controversial comments this summer landed the fast-food chain in the middle of the gay marriage debate.”
The problem is that many organizations, Christian or not, have opposition to same sex marriages. This could result in Chick-Fil-A stopping funding or refusing requests for funding from many organizations. They have already decided to quit funding Focus on the Family and the National Organization for Marriage. Time will tell who else will suffer the chopping block.
As people are learning of this new page of the story blogs are filling up with outrage and disappointment. Some of it is directed toward Chick-Fil-A and some toward Moreno and Chicago politics for trying to stop the opening of a private business.
At this point, having known Dan Cathy and knowing of the company’s strong Christian commitment and moral stances, I hope that some clarification will be forthcoming from Corporate Headquarters quickly. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt until their actions prove otherwise.
Christians and conservatives have caved and compromised on so many issues in the past few years. It has to stop somewhere.
