Among the list of whoppers the public was told in order to sell the Affordable Care Act we can now include assurances that illegal aliens would not be able to claim benefits.

At a Mexican consulate in the border town of Brownsville, Texas, health care navigators were hard at work last month enrolling Mexican nationals through Obamacare exchanges. In other news, the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services urged insurance companies to enroll people who are unable to verify their immigration status, assuring them that lingering questions will be sorted out later. The Spanish-language version of the Covered California exchange says: “Fear not if you are undocumented and want to enroll your family in health insurance.” Nowhere on the site does it mention that illegal aliens are prohibited by law from enrolling.

The “no illegals” pledge was a calculated lie that the president and his supporters discarded as soon as it was no longer needed. President Obama was counting on the people’s short memories not to recall the promises he made in order to ram through his pet piece of legislation, and on the sycophant press’s loyalty not to remind the public of what he said.

Anyone with a memory longer than a goldfish will remember the uproar that Representative Joe Wilson (R-South Carolina) caused at the 2009 State of the Union Address when he shouted “You lie!” during the new president’s remarks. Fewer people will remember what Obama was lying about.

“There are also those who claim that our reform effort will insure illegal immigrants,” said Obama. “This, too, is false – the reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.”

At that point Wilson rudely interrupted President Obama’s absurd lie, for which he later apologized. The president however, has not yet apologized for deluding us all. He still thinks he’s the wronged party because someone with no respect for decorum sounded the baloney alarm while he had the floor.

The idea that Democrats would ever exclude their favorite burgeoning demographic group from a new entitlement program seemed far-fetched even in 2009. They throw a conniption fit whenever anyone suggests that people who entered this country illegally shouldn’t get driver’s licenses or in-state tuition rates. But they’re going to deny them health insurance? Not likely.

Notable “fact-checking” organizations took the president’s side at the time of Wilson’s outburst, including, which retorted, “Obama was correct when he said his plan wouldn’t insure illegal immigrants; the House bill expressly forbids giving subsidies to those who are in the country illegally.”

That would count for a lot in a nation in which the rule of law reigned supreme, but not in Obama’s America where the executive branch exercises a degree of “discretion” that borders on the monarchial. The law is what Obama says it is. If he chooses to extend enrollment deadlines past the dates explicitly laid out in the ACA, then it is done, and if he chooses to allow illegal aliens to enroll, no one will tell him otherwise. Laws or portions of laws that the chief executive does not like are routinely ignored.

All liberals had to do was lie to get the enormous new entitlement established. Having achieved that, they can now shame anyone who was actually dumb enough to believe them by accusing them of depriving poor people of badly needed medical care, no doubt because of racist motives. “Of course Obamacare won’t cover illegals” is slowly being replaced with “What’s wrong with Obamacare helping the undocumented?”

Illegal aliens will gain access to taxpayer-funded medical benefits the same way they do Section 8 housing, EBT, and SSI—they will simply walk into the benefits office and pretend they don’t know they’re not entitled. The government bureaucrats who work there will in turn pretend that they don’t know that these people are not citizens. Everyone will know that everyone else is lying and no one will care because they will maintain between themselves an unstated “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. If anyone actually proposes a mechanism to verify immigration status, the various pressure groups will cry racism. And the charade will go on.

The president’s Aunt Zeituni was a master of gaming the system. In 2000 she entered this country on a two-year temporary visa. She did not leave even after being court-ordered to return to Kenya in 2003 and 2004, though she did manage to live in a Boston public housing project and to collect $700 a month in welfare benefits and disability. Aunt Zeituni begged for asylum though she faced no real danger in her native land; Kenya just isn’t stupid enough to hand out free money the way we do here. She was granted a green card in 2010, which I’m sure had nothing to do with her powerful nephew. Last week she passed away, a welfare recipient for fourteen years and an illegal alien for eight of them.

Illegal aliens have access to all of our various entitlement programs. They simply obtain that access illegally, which doesn’t usually induce pangs of conscience among people who break the law every day. Aunt Zeituni, for example, illegally overstayed her visa, illegally collected welfare benefits, and illegally donated to her nephew’s campaign.

Anyone who can get here will receive subsidized insurance, which, considering our farcical border enforcement is likely to be a very large number of people. Nor will they be turned away because of preexisting conditions which will naturally run the gamut of third world diseases—HIV from Africa and tuberculosis from Mexico to name a few.

To think that the new healthcare entitlement will be any different from previous entitlements is the pinnacle of foolishness. We’ve been down this road a thousand times before. The program is supposedly only for citizens or legal resident aliens, but in reality no one’s checking. It will all run on the honor system, at the insistence of the dishonorable. The taxpayer will be robbed blind and anyone who doesn’t like it is a bad Christian, anti-American, and of course racist.
