Newt Gingrich told me today that it’s all over if he doesn’t win in South Carolina:
“There’s no more time for talking about stopping Mitt Romney. We’re going to do it next week in South Carolina or he’s almost certain to be the Republican nominee,” says a fundraising e-mail I received today from “Newt Gingrich.”
Now, I love hyperbole as much as the next guy (I really, really, really do). But, this seems like a risky sales pitch.
Sure, it creates a sense of urgency – but, what if Newt loses S.C. by a point or two? Does that mean all of his supporters should close their wallets and go home? After all, Romney would “almost certainly” be the nominee.
