In Part 1, I documented how Islam, even from Muhammad’s time, was a conquering religio-politico system.  That column left off with how Charles Martel stopped the Muslim advance in Europe, then the Crusades were a long belated response to Islamonazi attacks on historic Christian centres.  Thanks to them, Christian Europe could hold its ground and push back.

And there was much to push back against.

Islamic slave trade

Most people indoctrinated in the government schools, taught by members of the fanatically pro-Democrat teachers unions, think of slavery as an evil perpetrated by white Europeans on black people.  We all know about the horrors of the “Middle Passage”, where up to 12 million black people were forced from their homelands and into slavery in the North Americas, and maybe 2 million more died because of the atrocious conditions on the slave ships.

But far less known is the thriving Islamic slave trade.  This had many more victims and was far more brutal than even the Middle Passage.  In the last 1400 years, over 28 million Africans were enslaved in the Muslim world.   About 80–90 percent died in the transit around East Africa or across the Sahara Desert.  And they left very few descendants because most males were castrated.

So it’s incredibly ironic that many African Americans, such as Cassius Clay, wanted to abandon their alleged “slave names”, but they adopted names like Muhammad Ali, from the very culture that was the epitome of enslaving Africans.

The great African-American patriot, Dr Walter Williams, has documented that Black Slavery is Alive in 2001, but in Islam-held areas of Africa:

“Slavery in the Sudan is in part a result of a 15-year war by the Muslim north against the black Christian and animist south. Arab militias, armed by the Khartoum government, raid villages, mostly those of the Dinka tribe. They shoot the men and enslave the women and children. Women and children are kept as personal property or they’re taken north and auctioned off.”

White slavery by Barbary Pirates

As another great African American patriot, Thomas Sowell, has often pointed out, blacks were not enslaved because they were black, but because they were available.  But other races also ended up in Muslim slave markets.  The Muslim Barbary states of North Africa encouraged the pirates to prey on Europeans.  As the late Christopher Hitchens writes:

“How many know that perhaps 1.5 million Europeans and Americans were enslaved in Islamic North Africa between 1530 and 1780?”

The European powers basically paid a ransom, and tacitly supported the piracy when it was against a rival nations.  But when we won independence from Great Britain, our ships became more vulnerable to piracy, since they lost the protection of the Royal Navy.  So in 1785, our future second and third Presidents, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, met with Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja, Algier’s Ambassador to London.  They demanded to know by what right the Barbary States had to capture American ships and enslave both crew and passengers.  It would have been hard for Adja to blame America’s evil past, because it barely had any!  No, Adja replied, giving basically the same reason as today’s Islamonazis:

“It was written in the Koran, that all Nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon whoever they could find and to make Slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Mussulman [Muslim] who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise.”

A big difference is that Islam lacked the equivalent of Christian abolitionists like William Wilberforce in Britain and Harriet Beecher Stowe here.

Unfortunately, when Adams became president, he preferred pacificist isolationism, and paid tribute to the pirates.  As usual, this appeasement just emboldened the Barbary terrorists to demand up to 10% of America’s national budget, while captives were kept in appalling conditions.

Defeating the Pirates: the birth of our Navy

Fortunately, President Jefferson saw it differently, with support from George Washington, and built up our navy, then sent them to defend our shipping in the North African area.  In 1 August 1801, our schooner (not starship!) USS Enterprise faced the equally strong Barbary ship Tripoli, but defeated it decisively with superior gunnery skills.  But in 1803, our frigate USS Philadephia ran aground and was capture.  A few months later, Lieutenant Stephen Decatur led a raid to destroy the ship so the enemy couldn’t use it.  The famous Admiral Nelson praised it as “the most bold and daring act of the age.”

Then in 1805, General William Eaton led our Marines (plus some mercenaries) in the Battle of Derna, where they captured Derna in the Barbary state of Tripoli.  This first American land battle victory on foreign soil explains why we have a clause in the Marine Hymn, “to the shores of Tripoli”.

Unfortunately, much to Eaton’s disgust, bureaucrats in the Jefferson administration agreed to pay a $60,000 ransom for the American prisoners.

Not surprisingly, the pirates were soon back to their old tricks, especially while we were distracted with the War of 1812.  So in 1815, the fourth president James Madison sent a fleet of 10 warships, commanded by Decatur and William Bainbridge.  They proved far too strong for the Barbary ships, and the Dey of Algiers surrendered.  All American captives were returned and tributes ended.  Madison rightly said:

“It is a settled policy of America, that as peace is better than war, war is better than tribute. The United States, while they wish for war with no nation, will buy peace with none.”

This firm stand by navy both weakened the Barbary states and emboldened the previously gutless European powers.  So in the years that followed, they ended the Barbary menace for good.

Obama’s appeasement

Now we see Obama apologizing to Afghanistan because some Qur’ans were burned, joined by his appeasement-minded dhimmitudinous General John R. Allen.  Of course, in that culture, appeasement is considered a weakness.  Similarly, Clinton’s retreat after the “Black Hawk Down” tragedy in Somalia encouraged Osama to believe that America was weak and could be attacked with impunity.

But we don’t hear a peep from Obama protesting against the typically violent over-reaction that resulted in American deaths.  And of course, he and his whole cabal are deafeningly silent about the wanton violence against Christians in that country, and in many other Muslim-ruled countries around the world.  Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who was raised in a Muslim area, points out that Islamophobia pales beside Muslim anti-Christian actions, given that From one end of the muslim world to the other, Christians are being murdered for their faith.

Nor of course was there any problem burning Bibles.  The total lack of violence by Christians, in contrast to the murderous rampage by Muslims, should tell these Dhimmis what the real religion of peace is!

As shown above, Islamonazis have been brutal enslavers and pirates, and long before America was even a nation.  As shown, Islam, almost from the beginning, has been a militantly aggressive religion, and this militancy is consistent with its own “holy book”.  Our own early history should also show the folly of appeasement, compared with the force of our Navy against Islamonazi pirates.
