Parents send their children to school to be educated, not indoctrinated. This fact, more than any other, is what fuels the homeschooling movement in America. There are now more than 1.5 million children schooled at home in America, a number that has grown rapidly during the three years of the Obama administration. In fact, President Obama and his fellow leftists have turned homeschooling into one of America’s few growth industries, a movement that continues to grow in direct proportion to the disenchantment of parents with liberal shenanigans carried out in the name of education. Homeschoolers are Americans who have said, “I am fed up with leftist indoctrination and I’m not going to take it anymore.”
Teachers’ unions and left-leaning educators, concerned about the growth of homeschooling in America, have ramped up the volume on their two favorite lies about the concept: 1) homeschooled children are maladjusted and lack social skills, and 2) homeschooling is an elitist white phenomenon. The first lie is just the same old tired socialization argument public educators have told for years, an argument easily refuted. The second lie is newer, although it is really just a twist on an old liberal tactic: brand anything you disagree with as racist.
As part of their socialization criticism, public school officials like to portray homeschooled children as poor little wretches isolated against their will by overbearing, anti-social parents. Predictably, just the opposite is true. “Research has shown the positive effects of homeschooling through the years. While some critics say teaching at home may stunt their social growth, Dr. Brian D. Ray, president of the National Home Education Research Institute, reveals homeschooled students fare well or better than public and private school students in terms of social, emotional and psychological development. Additionally, homeschoolers earn higher marks than peers who attend public schools. In Academic Leadership, an online journal, Dr. Ray and Bruce K. Eagleson…cite findings from at least three nationwide studies across the United States and two nationwide studies in Canada. ‘The home educated in grades K-12 have scored, on average, at the 65th to 80th percentile on standardized academic achievement tests in the United States and Canada, compared to the public school average of the 50th percentile.’”
As to the claim that homeschooling is just another form of white elitism, the left—as it often does—ignores the facts. But calling homeschooling another form of white elitism amounts to more than just ignoring the facts, it is an example of the soft bigotry of the left because it assumes that skin color controls the thoughts of people. White parents are divided about sending their children to public school versus private school versus homeschooling. Why, then, should liberals assume that black parents are not divided in the same way?
In fact, the fastest growing component of the homeschooling movement in America is comprised of African-American parents who cite the same reasons for choosing this option as their Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian, and multi-ethnic counterparts. Writing about Vanessa Oden, an African-American homeschooling mother from California, in the September 27, 2011 issue of WORLD, Tiffany Owens said: “She and her husband chose to homeschool, joining the ranks of 100,000 homeschooling African-American and multi-ethnic families. Cultural myths (perpetuated by leftist teachers’ unions) in many multi-ethnic communities have classified homeschooling as for “white people” only, but moms’ stories from Arizona to Harlem suggest that homeschooling is an option for everyone.”
Homeschoolers are at the forefront of an ever-increasing number of conservatives and Christians in America who are tired of seeing their tax dollars used to finance the pet projects and misguided policies of liberals, statists, Marxists, socialists, and communists. They are patriots in the mold of America’s Founders who have decided to take action against liberals who try to dominate their lives. Now if conservatives and Christians will take similar actions to counter liberal lies in other areas such as the environment, taxation, national defense, limited government, individual liberty, and traditional American values, we might once again come to recognize the America envisioned by the Founders.
