Perhaps you’ve heard this maxim: Tell a lie often enough and people will believe it. A corollary to this maxim is the bigger the lie the easier it is to convince people of its veracity. Liberals are masters of applying this maxim and its corollary. They have used blatant lies—big lies—for decades to keep minorities on the plantation and now they are using the same tactics to rope in women. One of the big lies that liberals like to tell minorities is that they—big hearted liberals—are conducting a war on poverty; a war intended to bring minorities into the economic mainstream. The lie works.
Liberals drone on incessantly with their claims of caring about minorities when in fact what they really care about is their votes. It is a strategy based on lies, but the strategy works. It works in part because minorities are forced by Democrats and their allies in the teacher’s unions to attend sub-par public schools that fill their heads with multi-cultural mush instead of teaching them to think. Consequently, minorities have been a dependable voting bloc for Democrats for more than 50 years. But the hard truth is that the so-called war on poverty has been a dismal failure that has done nothing to eliminate poverty in America. In fact, the minorities that have pulled themselves up out of poverty in America are those who got smart and turned their backs on government assistance. Like other poor people in America who have overcome their circumstances, these successful minorities built better lives by working hard, working smart, and working long. They sought opportunity instead of government assistance and relied on their work ethic instead of handouts.
Minorities who have risen up out of poverty are easy to spot in American society. They are the successful business leaders, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, professors, scientists, politicians, military leaders, and other professionals who liberals constantly attack, vilify, and belittle as if they are somehow traitors for building better lives without government assistance. In fact, nothing scares liberal politicians more than minorities who do not want and will not accept what they—condescending liberals—have to offer: government assistance, entitlements, and handouts. What dependent minorities see as help from the government successful minorities accurately view as chains that shackle them to a master who wants to keep them in bondage.
Fearful that minorities might someday comprehend the hoax that has been perpetrated on them by liberal politicians, Democrats are working hard to create a new dependable and dependent voting bloc: women. With their desperation increasing daily because of the manifest failings of Obamacare, Democrats have come up with another big lie, this one aimed at women. The new big lie being circulated by the left is that Republicans are conducting a war on women.
According to liberals who enjoy playing fast and loose with the facts, the supposed war on women is being conducted on several fronts. One of the battlegrounds in this fictional war is workplace inequality. Liberals are fond of comparing total pay for men against total pay for women and blaming the difference on male domination of the workplace, gender discrimination, and the vestiges of a patriarchal society. According to Democrats and other assorted liberals, Republicans are a bunch of mean-spirited bigots who conspire to hold women back and pay them less than men.
Democrats claim that the most recent proof that Republicans are conducting a war on women can be found in their refusal to support new Democrat backed legislation called the “Paycheck Fairness Act.” This misnamed piece of proposed legislation could have been more accurately called the shameless-pandering-to-women act. Pandering to women with lies that appeal to emotions while blurring the facts is part of the Democrat Party’s strategy for averting disaster in the mid-term Congressional elections later this year. The defeated Paycheck Fairness Act was itself based on a lie Democrats are fond of telling. To wit, women earn less because the deck is stacked against them by cold-hearted, patriarchal men who are capable of viewing women only in subservient roles; the tired old barefoot-and-pregnant argument.
The most convincing lies are based on partial truths and the lie of paycheck inequality certainly fits this mold. Average pay for working women is less in America than average pay for working men. Where liberals go off the tracks on this issue is in automatically attributing the difference to discrimination, male domination, patriarchy, and other nefarious causes. Here is how President Obama sees the issue: “Today, the average full-time working woman earns less than 77 cents for every dollar a man earns; for African American women, Latinas, it’s even less. And in 2014, that’s an embarrassment. It is wrong.” Like most lies this one quickly falls apart under close scrutiny. Any objective observer who looks into the difference between average pay for men and women will quickly find that the reasons are explained by incontrovertible facts that belie the politically motivated, self-serving, purposefully distorted, and I should add, hypocritical reasons given by liberal politicians. Here are just a few of the reasons women earn less on average than men:
- Choice. Of their own free will, women continue to choose jobs that pay less than certain types of jobs typically held by men. These higher-paying fields that women choose to avoid involve work that is dirty, dangerous, or otherwise unpleasant. For example, although these fields are wide open to women there are only a very few female loggers, long-distance truckers, high-steel construction workers, roofers, diesel mechanics, electricians, plumbers, or asbestos-abatement technicians to name just a few occupations. These jobs and other dangerous, dirty, and unpleasant jobs like them pay more not because they necessarily require more skill or education than the jobs women tend to choose, but because so few people—male and female—are willing to do them. Hence, it is difficult to find men or women to fill these jobs, a fact that drives up the pay these jobs command. In other words, the choices women make about careers and jobs tend to put them on the wrong side of the law of supply and demand.
- Part-time employment. Women are much more inclined than men to seek part-time work. In fact, approximately 25 percent of working women have part-time jobs. Part-time jobs drive down the average pay for women in two ways. First, part-time employees work fewer hours which, of course, means they bring home less pay. Second, part-time employees—male and female—are often paid at a lesser hourly rate then full-time personnel. President Obama and other hypocritical liberals know full well that part-time pay tend to bring down the average pay for women, but they conveniently ignore this fact when they make their condescending statements about equal pay. If there is discrimination in paying part-time personnel less than full-time employees, it is discrimination against part-timers not women. Male part-timers also earn less than their full-time male counterparts.
- Stop-out phenomenon. Women are much more likely to stop out of their careers than men, especially when they become mothers. When a woman takes time out from her career to have a baby and raise the child, she loses valuable time on the job that equates to experience. Experience, of course, is a universally considered factor when determining level of pay. Typically, the more experience one has the more pay one earns—male or female.
- White House employment. Women who want equal pay should avoid accepting employment in the Obama White House. Women who work in the White House for President Obama earn less than men who work in the White House. As Matt Walsh has pointed out in commenting on this phenomenon: “…the hypocrisy here is staggering. In Obama’s own staff, women make substantially less than men. Imagine the arrogance of a man who gallops in front of camera, pledging to rescue all of womanhood from the oppressive grasp of the national wage gap, while electing to maintain those disparities for the females in his immediate employ.”
If there are women doing the same jobs as men and they are equally qualified, equally experienced, and equally productive, they should earn the same as their male counterparts. In fact, they had better earn as much as their male counterparts. That law—the Equal Pay Act—has been on the books since 1963. But requiring equal pay for equal work is not good enough for the Democrats. In the defeated Paycheck Fairness Act, Democrats sought to require equal pay for different jobs. What the Act boiled down to was this: The government wants to decide what a given job is worth to an employer rather than letting the law of supply-and-demand make the determination; just more evidence of the larger liberal agenda: controlling America according to their dictates through government coercion.
