Newt Gingrich adviser Vince Haley rejected a call from the Rick Santorum super PAC for his candidate to get out of the 2012 race – and argued this morning that it’s Mitt Romney, rather than Gingrich or Santorum, who’s making a mess of the Republican primary.
I was on Geraldo Rivera’s radio program with Haley just now, and the Gingrich policy adviser said that the results from primaries so far show “it’s clear that the voters” are not coming around to Romney’s side of the fight.
“I think he should bow out of the race so that conservatives can have a debate” about how to take on Obama, Haley said. “It’s Mitt Romney who’s screwing up this race and it’s his establishment support” that’s sustaining him over the hesitations of the GOP electorate.
As for Santorum, Haley charged that the Pennsylvanian helped “squander” the balanced federal budget produced when Gingrich was House speaker. In a contest over who is closer to the hearts and minds and priorities of conservative voters, Haley said Gingrich stacks up well against Santorum.
