House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that the retirement of Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) is a “great loss” for Congress and the country.

“Her leaving will be a great loss to the Congress of the United States, the people of California and to our country,” Pelosi said. “Small in size, but a giant in terms of her contribution to the country. … It’s a real loss, I think.”

Delivered the news by a reporter at the tail end of a press conference in the Capitol, Pelosi appeared stunned. Boxer had announced via her website minutes earlier that she wouldn’t seek another term in 2016.

“What?” she asked. “That’s funny, she called me, said she wanted to talk personally. I thought she maybe wanted to have dinner tonight or something.”
