It took all of a few minutes at the POLITICO/NBC debate to have Mitt Romney and Rick Perry tearing each other up on the issue of jobs.

Romney took the first veiled swipe at Perry, saying the he wouldn’t be running for president “if I had spent my whole life in government” — a clear reference to the career politician Perry.

The Texas governor returned fire, first praising Romney for doing “a great job of creating jobs in the private sector,” then zinging: “When he moved that experience to government, he had one of the lowest job-creation rates.”

“We created more jobs in the last three months in Texas,” Perry said, than Romney created in his whole term.
