Sens. John Kyl (R-Ariz.) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) on Tuesday introduced an alternative bill to the DREAM Act that would allow undocumented immigrants brought here as children to stay in the U.S. without an expedited pathway to citizenship.

The legislation is the first concrete move Republicans have made toward immigration reform since the election, and it’s unclear how much support the bill will attract. Both senators are retiring at the end of this term, meaning they won’t be in the Senate to push the bill forward when the next Congress is sworn in early next year.
