Those of you that have read my columns here on Patriot Update over the past year have likely noticed a pattern. Every few weeks, I write a column on why I am very skeptical of the theory of global warming. Quite frankly, I get a little tired of winning the same argument over and over. In fact, there are so many challenges facing the country, I would like nothing better than for the warming alarmists to admit defeat and allow the issue to die. Unfortunately this is impossible when one of the chief warming alarmists is President of the United States.
By now all of you have heard at least highlights and snippets from Obama’s State of the Union Speech. In that speech Obama once again pulled the proverbial global warming/climate change fire alarm in the theater. He lamented our impending doom from so called out of control climate change and even opined that it was our God ordained duty to raise up more windmills and pour billions into more green energy boondoggles. Even as I write this column, protestors have assembled on the national mall to lament that warming is causing blizzards! Meanwhile, these same protestors hurl false accusations at skeptics such as me that we are simply Neanderthals or anti-science.
So in honor of these continued attacks on our nation’s energy infrastructure for a crisis that doesn’t exist, allow me once again to summarize what the actual scientific debate is all about. As you read keep in mind what the brilliant physicist Stephen Hawking once said regarding the scientific method, “… you can disprove a theory by finding even a single observation that disagrees with the predictions of the theory.”
The original theory of global warming can be summarized thusly:
• Fossil fuels (including coal) give off carbon dioxide when burned.
• As the world’s population increases so does the burning of fossil fuels and thus the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
• Increased CO2 in the atmosphere creates a “greenhouse affect” (read that a blanketing of the earth’s upper atmosphere that reduces the escape of heat from the surface of the earth to outer space).
• Therefore as population and CO2 continue to increase, there will be a corresponding increase in the GLOBAL AVERAGE temperature of the earth. (Those first two words are key. We must not base energy policy decisions on what just what the temperatures did last summer in the United States. The theory is called GLOBAL warming). This temperature increase is then expected to result in the melting of polar ice, massive flooding, and more violent storms.
Skeptics did not define the theory they merely did what scientists should do. They tested the theory. Therefore, according to the scientific method, the presence or absence of warming in conjunction with CO2 increase is where the rubber meets the road in the climate debate. However, when we utilize our most accurate instrument data, we discover that over the past sixteen years, there has indeed been an increase in CO2 in the atmosphere but there has been no corresponding increase in global average temperature as was theorized. Now go back to Hawking’s comment above. Have we not now found the single scientific observation he was speaking about?
I am not skeptical that there has been warming in our century, (particularly through the 90’s). However, I am extremely skeptical that we have scientifically established causality. This should be the trajectory of the arguments in favor of continued and increased utilization of our God given coal resource. We must focus the national discussion on lack of credible scientific evidence of man-made causality.
It is precisely the lack of observed warming, (which undermines the alarmists in their pursuit of research funds) which led first to the sudden name change from “global warming” to “climate change” and now to “global climate disruption”. Climate alarmists must now attempt to blame every snow storm and hurricane and drought that occurs on global warming/climate change. This is being done despite recent peer reviewed scientific studies that show such claims are not at all credible. In fact, tornadoes, hurricanes and global tropical cyclone activity have all declined since the 1950’s. Therefore the true science deniers seem to be our opponents in the debate…and the President.
