WASHINGTON – The Interior Department announced that the Statue of Liberty will reopen by July 4.

Liberty Island has been closed since Hurricane Sandy struck the region in October, causing the loss of 400 jobs and hurting the city’s $100 million a year tourism trade related to the statue.

“Lady Liberty was hit hard by Superstorm Sandy but just like New York, she’ll be back stronger than ever,” said Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), who pushed for the reopening. “What a fitting date for Lady Liberty’s return.”
