“I am the Constitutionally and legitimately elected sheriff, and I absolutely refuse to surrender my responsibility to the federal government-Joe Arpaio.”– Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona
Your local sheriff is not just another law enforcement officer. He, or she, is unique in accountability, authority, and responsibilities.
A sheriff is a critical player capable to protect citizens from unlawful federal incursions and Constitutional rights violations. In light of the current gun debate, your Sheriff may be your last line of defense should a gun grab occur. Sheriff Richard Mack expands on this in his book County Sheriff: America’s Last Hope.
In another book by Sheriff Mack, From My Cold Dead Fingers-Why America Needs Guns he warns:
A day of reckoning is inevitable. Will guns be outlawed and taken away, leaving little vestige of constitutional freedom? Armed Americans (hopefully) will not submit willingly. On the other hand, a disarmed citizenry will have no choice but to behave like sheep. The pioneers of freedom who wrote the Declaration of Independence were considered traitors by a despotic British government, but they were not sheep. Neither did they intend their descendants to be.
If you have paid attention to the latest developments since the Sandy Hook massacre, you know that the debate over gun control has never been so focused or intense. The left with the support of all its organizations, Hollywood, the media, the President, and too many uninformed voters now scream for gun control or even out right confiscation.
I guess the liberals think that only the government can be trusted with guns. Ummm, let’s consider this idea for a moment. Adolph Hitler believed in gun confiscation, as did Joseph Stalin, Fidel Castro, Benito Mussolini, Mao Tze Tung, Pol Pot, Hugo Chavez, Karl Marx, and many more. How did this work out for the citizens of these dictators?
Read what three of these men believed. I am sure the others would heartily agree. They stated:
Joseph Stalin– If the opposition disarms, well and good. If it refuses to disarm, we shall disarm it ourselves.
Mao Tze Tung- All political power comes from the barrel of a gun. The communist party must command all the guns, that way, no guns can ever be used to command the party.
Adolph Hitler– The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the supply of arms to the underdogs is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let’s not have any native militia or native police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order throughout the occupied Russian territories, and a system of military strong-points must be evolved to cover the entire occupied country.
All of these comments stand in stark contrast to the words of Thomas Jefferson who said, The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) asserts that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed.
The good news is that many local sheriffs and state sheriff organizations have already gone on record to warn Washington that should there be any unconstitutional gun laws passed they would not enforce them. Lines in the sand have now been drawn.
Some sheriffs have threatened arrest to any federal agents who try to enter their respective states to confiscate firearms. This should offer us some encouragement, but now the sheriffs themselves are under attack. We cannot allow them to be neutralized. We must support our local sheriffs. Our sheriffs are extremely important to our own safety and local sovereignty.
What many Americans are not aware of at this point is that in several states there is a battle between state legislatures and their local sheriffs. These legislatures want to remove arrest powers from their sheriff’s or limit their authority in other ways. Should they succeed, it will prove detrimental to citizens. It would help pave the way for future gun control and further federal usurpation.
Delaware has already acted and disarmed its sheriffs. It has taken the lead in the war against Sheriffs. They have reduced their sheriffs to basic administrative duties.
Sheriff Jeff Christopher stated “My deputies and I have been relieved of all arrest powers and can’t even make a traffic stop. Delaware has only three counties…The other two sheriffs,…will not stand up with me.” More on this story can be found here:
The role of a sheriff can vary from state to state, but most are elected and responsible only to the people of their county. They do not report to a governor, council, or mayor. Each state is different but in the South, usually only the coroner can arrest a sheriff for a state crime. The sheriff’s loyalty and accountability is to his or her voting public.
Sheriff’s also have authority, in the case of high crimes, to cross county lines and exercise arrest powers. They are not restricted to strict boundaries as are city or county police. A sheriff can arrest anyone in any city within his jurisdiction while a police chief is limited to his own city.
Again, one of the primary benefits of having a publicly elected local sheriff is that he can refuse to enforce unconstitutional laws. Due to the possibility of a future gun grab or attempts to further restrict our rights, this is forefront in my thinking.
What can you do to help your local sheriff? There are several very important things that will help you protect your sheriff and protect your rights and safety.
If you can, get to know your sheriff. Some sheriffs offer citizen law enforcement academies designed to help citizens understand the functions and duties of the sheriff’s office. My wife and I just graduated from the one in my county. I stay involved by going on patrol with different deputy sheriffs, sitting in on the 911 center, and participating in other ways. In the process I’ve gotten to know my sheriff.
You can contact your state representatives and senators and let them know you want the sheriffs to keep their autonomy and their powers. Tell them why. Let them know that you understand the issue.
Finally, you can encourage your sheriff to protect you from federal incursion. Not every sheriff will stand up for you. Be sure that yours will. If he won’t, then work to get a new one, one that will.
I invite you to join with me and support your local sheriff.
