I was raised during a time where our differences were celebrated. Every time a kid complained about something like another kid being “weird” our parents or our teachers would tell us, “But isn’t it wonderful that we’re all different? Wouldn’t it be a boring world if we were all the same?”
We may still think the kid was weird but we knew we couldn’t really argue with that. This was back in the days that we are now told were so discriminatory against special needs, other races, girls, etc. So today we are “forced” to be “tolerant”. Somehow, though things seem to have gotten worse.
We are all supposed to treat everyone the same, yet respect different cultures, yet not act like people are different from each other. It’s a little confusing. There’s no winning as the rules keep changing.
