There must be something in the water liberals drink that scrambles their brains; something that renders them incapable of simple logic and common sense. Nowhere is the mushy-headed thinking of liberals more apparent than in the on-going debate over guns. For example, one of the favorite strategies of liberals who get worked up over gun violence is to establish so-called gun-free zones. It never seems to occur to anti-gun liberals that gun-free zones are just free-fire zones for criminals who pay no attention to a community’s laws. All a gun-free zone ever turns out to be in practical terms is an area in which criminals have guns and law-abiding citizens don’t. The statistics on gun violence in so-called gun-free zones bear this out.

In his new book, God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy, Governor Mike Huckabee makes a good point about the anti-gun crowd. He writes: “It still catches me off guard when I have a conversation with an adult who has never owned a firearm, never fired one, and yet who speaks so passionately against them. How does this staggering lack of knowledge result in such an abundance of opinion?” Huckabee goes on to make the obvious point that it is those who use guns for nefarious purposes who are responsible for gun violence in America—not the guns themselves and not law-abiding citizens who own guns and use them safely. He gives several examples of how illogical it is for liberals to blame guns or gun ownership by law-abiding citizens for gun violence.

Huckabee points out that scissors can be used as a deadly weapon, but liberals don’t lobby to out-law scissors. He also points out the obvious about cars and water. Cars can provide convenient transportation for those who obey the rules of the road but a car can be a deadly weapon in the hands of a drunk driver. Water can be used for many positive purposes, but it can also be used to drown people. Applying the “logic” liberals apply to guns, they should be lobbying for car-free and water-free zones. The same could be said for airplanes and many other things. So why do liberals become so worked up over guns. I think the answer to this question is that they don’t know anything about guns and are, therefore, illogically afraid of them.

Liberals tend to be emotionalists anyway, so it should come as no surprise that their responses to guns are emotional rather than logical, factual, or reasonable. It should also come as no surprise that liberals use crass emotional appeals when trying to outlaw guns. Returning to Governor Huckabee’s new book, he states: “After every horrible mass murder involving a gun, political opportunists race to the microphones to make the strongest possible emotional pitch for watering down the Second Amendment—and weakening the liberty and safety of law-abiding citizens. Even if it is indisputable that their proposals wouldn’t have had the slightest effect on the latest bloodbath, the gun-hating left and a sympathetic media team up.” He goes on to make the point that all of the various laws proposed to limit gun ownership just punish law-abiding citizens without doing anything to hinder the violent tendencies of those who break the law.

Huckabee quotes statistics that show indisputably that the states which adopt the strictest anti-gun laws have the highest rate of gun violence. Even banning so-called assault weapons (Is there any other kind?) results in murder rates that are significantly higher than without the ban. The obvious question that mushy-headed liberals refuse to deal with is this: Since criminals don’t obey the current laws regarding guns (or anything else), why would they suddenly change and obey new gun laws? And to show further that the real “gun nuts” are anti-gun liberals, consider this little tidbit of hypocrisy on their part: Hollywood liberals make millions producing movies that are filled with gratuitous gun violence while at the same time investing their ill-gotten gains in supporting anti-gun campaigns and candidates. The concept of shame never seems to occur to a liberal “gun nut” no matter how egregiously hypocritical he might be.

Another fact that liberals conveniently avoid discussing is that most mass shootings are committed by mentally-deranged people. Yet, to quote Governor Huckabee’s new book again: “Ironically, many on the left strenuously oppose mental health intervention on the principle that it violates the privacy rights of the patient.” That’s a liberal for you. Liberals are perfectly content to allow an angry, frustrated, vengeful individual who is also mentally-disturbed to roam free rather than do anything that might be considered an invasion of his privacy. It never seems to occur to hand-wringing liberals that an individual who commits mass murder is going to quickly lose all semblance of privacy anyway.

Liberals constantly bemoan the increase in gun violence that will supposedly occur if states and local communities pass concealed-carry laws. Yet, in every case just the opposite happens. When law-citizens are empowered to protect themselves and their families, gun violence decreases quickly and measurably. Governor Huckabee gives the example of the state of Texas. Prior to passing a concealed-carry law, Texas had experienced an all-time high of 1,835 gun deaths. In the years after concealed-carry laws were passed, gun deaths begin to decrease such that in 2013 the number was down to 1,000.

Gun-control laws are not even about guns. They are about government control. Correspondingly, the Second Amendment is not about the right to own guns per se, it is about freedom. As Governor Huckabee points out in God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy, the Bill of Rights is not about restricting individual American citizens, it is about restricting government. Next time you are talking to a liberal—should doing so be absolutely necessary—hand him a copy of the Bill of Rights and point out this inconvenient fact.
