Taxing the rich IS NOT the answer but a fair flat tax for ALL regardless of income or earning with NO WRITE-OFFS for ANYTHING is. If we had a 10% flat tax with a 2 % VAT tax and NO other taxes what so every for any reason and those taxes could never be raised for any reason we’d all have more money to spend, and governments spending would be under control; especially if all payment were required to be done electronically and cash was worthless to the point where you could use it to start a fire in your fireplace.

I just did someone’s taxes for 2010 and they would have had ~$15K more to spend on goods if we were at a flat 10%, but instead the state and feds will now take their hard earned money to support at least two families of welfare trash, illegal aliens and parasites coming into this country at Mach 1 because we refuse to close ALL points of entry and start deporting all the waste we have in this nation. It is absolutely preposterous to have millionaires paying only 15% while those who work for a living actually pay 20 – 36% of their wages to the government, while the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Hmmm , sounds like NWO meets ?…They would be able to usher in communism right nicely there nvrpc … You just brought in too many variation possibilities for the future , in the form of probability for complicity …

Check this out…. remember… the wealthy got us into this mess….. paying a flat tax is fair as long as we can help those who currently are underpaid or not working at all…. the wealthy determine jobs…. how about paying no taxes if you make less than $40,000 a year..??

    • el_loco_jp

Just a national sales tax (10% should be enough). That way everybody pays and since rich people spend more they will pay more.

    • simplyconservative

A few things – just like the rich, welfare receipients are people too. We needn’t be pejorative (trash, parasites, etc.) about those who are simply using the system to their maximum benefit. We all do that. What needs to go away is this system that can be gamed in so many ways. And aren’t the rich supposed to get richer? It doesn’t make the poor poorer. I want the poor to get rich too. Except for medical issues and perhaps a few others from which the government already protects us, we are responsible for our own individual economic status. This is an essential American doctrine that unfortunately progressives want to change. I liked what Mitch Daniels said about the rich and the soon-to-be-rich.
Dr. North makes some good points, but misrepresents a few too. The Fair Tax is the best plan because it does not attenuate prosperity – it is a tax on spending, not income. Economic stimulus? How does a 15-20% raise sound due to no more federal withholding? The underground economy (drugs, weapons, prostitution, organized crime, wages paid “under the table,” etc.) becomes a whole new income stream as the previously hidden money from these activities gets spent at the mall/gas pump/limousine dealership. The Fair Tax is fair because EVERYBODY lives tax-free up to the poverty level and the prebate protects the poorest consumers. Those who revile the prebate for benefiting the rich forget that they are people too (see my first sentence) and should get treated equally. That’s fair after all, right?

  • Paul Burgener

The FairTax doesn’t give refunds to the poor, it gives refunds to everyone. To the poor this is a lot of money. To the rich, it’s negligible. We’re a civilized country. We shouldn’t force a head of household to pay the government before he pays the poverty level cost of living for his family. This is was the refund (or prebate) of the FairTax does.

    • simplyconservative

Just to clarify, Paul, the Fair Tax does NOT force a head of household to pay the government before he pays the poverty level cost of living for his family. I think that’s what you were trying to say, but as written it might get read the opposite way.

  • nvrpc

I’ll tell you how unfair todays taxes are. As I said before I just did a ladies taxes is on disability, walks, talks and gets in her camero just fine. She pays NO taxes of any kind all year long but at the end of the years gets a refund. How is that fair. She should be paying her 10% just like we should all be paying 10% and 10% only. It’s all BS. After doing this for years all I see is the poor pay nothing and are the parasite of this nation, the working middle class gets hosed all years long and pays all the taxes and the rich are laughing at your a-usses all the way to the bank and pay people to protect their money so they can go make more and pay less every year. There is absolutely no fairness in the current tax system what so every. NONE. It’s 60,000 pages of code to protect those who write the laws to protect themselves. Period..

  • James Kuhlenschmidt

Dr. North does not understand the Fair Tax. He claims it provides a prebate to the poor, but it gives the prebate to every taxpayer 18 or over based on family size. Quit misrepresenting the Fair Tax! No person or business is taxed, regardless of income. Only purchases are taxed, and only once. Therefore, you can avoid paying the sales tax on purchases by buying used items. We would go from a country with the highest corporate tax rate in the world to the lowest. That would provide ENORMOUS stimulation to the economy, PLUS all federal tax withholding, FICA, Medicare tax and Estate taxes go away! Read about it! Very few people do, but they criticize it anyway.

Please take action to voice strong opposition to the Department of Defense’s December 30, 2011, judgment to award a Brazilian-owned and operated company a critical contract to supply Light Air Support (LAS) aircraft for the U.S. Air Force. This flawed decision is not only a blow to Americans struggling to find work, but it poses serious threats to our national security.
The LAS contract would be worth nearly $1 billion American taxpayer dollars. Within months of the initial request for proposal, only two aircraft manufactures remained in the running; Wichita, Kansas-based Hawker Beechcraft with its AT-6, and Brazil’s Embraer offering its EMB-314. Last November, the Department of Defense abruptly, and without public justification, excluded Hawker Beechcraft from consideration for the contract. The contract was subsequently awarded to Embraer – the only remaining bidder. The contract decision was made despite the fact that Embraer is currently under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission for corruption and bribery.
The American-made Hawker Beechcraft AT-6 solution would create and sustain 1,400 long-term jobs in the U.S. The Brazilian-made Embraer EMB-314 solution presents the opportunity for a mere 50 final assembly jobs in the U.S. and will sustain long-term jobs only in Brazil. In these troubling economic times, politicians and military officials should seize every opportunity to foster job growth here at home instead of providing an economic boost to other countries.

THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH THE CURRENT TAX SYSTEM IT IS THE THOUSANDS OF PAGES OF LOOPHOLES THAT WERE ADDED TO REWARD FRIENDS AT THE TIME. REPEAL THE CURRENT TAX CODE AND ITS LOOPHOLES AND REPLACE IT WITH AN UP TO DATE CODE WITH ONLY STANDARD DEDUCTIONS. CONGRESS CAN NOT KEEP ADDING PROVISIONS TO THE CODE BECAUSE IT ALLOWS IRS TO PICK AND CHOOSE PROVISIONS TO PUNISH CERTAIN TAXPAYERS AND NOT OTHERS.

    • relayman

There is plenty wrong with the current Marxist income tax system. Because by its very nature it is assaults liberty and property, it is inherently corrupt and beyond any way of making it just and fair anymore than you can make robbery just and fair. A tax on earnings relies on force and fear to collect it-not too all together different that a common street mugger.

Good interview! For the US to charge above the tithe of 10% that GOD calls for [to meet the legitimate needs of the church (advancing the Truth of Christ, which includes feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, healing the sick, etc.)]: to demand over & above that modest return from GOD’S many blessings in life is simply arrogant & selfish. The legislators were elected to protect us, yet they are to blame for the meltdown & swindle of the American people. Restoring Constitutional authority is the only way to save this sinking ship we call America!

  • Hardtack

How can some people demand “fairness” and “equality” on one hand and “higher tax rates for the rich” on the other? Our existing progressive (unequal) tax rates conform nicely to Karl Marx’s slogan, “from each according to his ability, to each according his needs” while violating the 14th Amendment to the Constitution which effectively says government shall not deprive the individual of property or deny them equal protection under the law.
Why should some citizens pay a higher or lower tax rate than other citizens? The only “fair” and “equal” tax is a flat tax – no matter what it is assessed upon. It is a bit hypocritical to lecture on “fairness” and “equality” while promoting “tax the rich.” The self-deceit people will swallow when their mind is clouded with envy is remarkable.

    • relayman

A so called flat tax does not introduce fairness, it only (temporarily) spreads the plunder a little more equally. Remember the current Marxist income tax began as a flat tax, and 2% at that. How long will be before the congress cretins decide to, “be fair” and start writing in deductions and loopholes, to where we are right beck where we started or worse? The answer is to get back to the system the Framers intended to fund the government, a sales tax. Read Federalist 21!

      • nvrpc

Well that will never happen so the only recourse is to tear it down completely to the ground and start all over again however that will never happen neither because the classes on people by race and money are fragmented to the max and therefore we are heading to be part of the EU that’s already failed. This will make us what they’ve always wanted. “equal” yep that’s right equally poor.. Welcome to the NWO that no one is ever going to stop and that includes your BOY Romney the white Obama.

    • simplyconservative

I am all for Marx’s “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need” as long as it’s voluntary. That’s what I’m doing when I tithe at church or give my friend some money to get through a financial rough patch. When that credo is imposed on others by a government, it is oppression disguised as compassion. The less the government takes from me, the more I have to give freely to others. Charity is in the giving and there is no charity in taking from others against their will no matter what the ends. I often wonder how it would sound to precede Marx’s slogan with “TAKE from each…” and contrarily “GIVE from each according to his ability…” What would happen if our government stopped pitting us against each other and simply ASKED us to give more VOLUNTARILY. Not to the wasteful, inefficient government, but to each other — our neighbors, our churches, our charities. I’d bet we’d come through big time if there were a national campaign to give to the poor privately instead of via the government.

Dr.Ron Paul 2012 for a real plan to take back our country, and fixing it in four years !!!

    • PAWatcher

Rep. Paul’s answer to the the personal income tax question is the only answer- It’s Unconstitutional. I’m all for a consumption tax, the more you can afford to spend on non essentials the more you pay.

      • nvrpc

So you’re saying we should have now taxes at all, correct? So where is the money for roads, school, SS, Medicare, dams, aquaducts, police forces, fire departs, R&D, military’s, weapons, etc goping to come from. Please lay this plan out for us so we can all understand.

  • http://ActionAmerica.org/ John Gaver

Dr. North is being very disingenuous, when he states that, “the FairTax rebates money back to the poor”, since this leaves people to incorrectly think that the FairTax is unfair. He intentionally fails to tell folks that the FairTax rebates the exact same amount to EVERY taxpayer, rich or poor, based only on family size.

The FairTax prebate doesn’t go to any particular group. It goes equally to EVERY taxpayer. The amount of the prebate is the same as the amount of tax that a person living at the poverty line would pay in FairTax in a month. The purpose of this prebate is to eliminate taxes on basic cost of living expenses for EVERY taxpayer. Instead of exempting certain purchases, such as food, as a way to un-tax basic cost of living purchases, the FairTax taxes everything and then prebates the amount of tax that a person living at the poverty line would pay in tax, if he spent every cent that he earned on new retail products and services. Bill Gates would get the exact same (approx.) $630 check as his gardener, who also had a family of five.

That’s why the FairTax really is Fair. If treats everyone exactly the same. Everyone is taxed at exactly the same rate on purchases beyond basic cost of living purchases.

That fits Dr. North’s criteria. I have no idea why he is misrepresenting the FairTax. But there can be only two possibilities. Either he knows the truth and is intentionally trying to misrepresent the facts, in order to push some other agenda or he hasn’t studied the FairTax and therefore, doesn’t understand it.

Either way, what he says about the FairTax prebate is incorrect.

Is Dr. North a religious leader or an economist? He was introduced as an economist, but he spent the entire allotted time bringing in his own personal viewpoint, which had little to do with economics and relied heavily on his own personal religious views.

Dr. North claims that he does not understand why tax reform proposals untax the poor. There is a very simple reason for that. Any regressive tax system would be DOA with the American public and DOA with congress. The research that went into the FairTax clearly found that a regressive tax system would not have the support needed for passage.

I wish that Dr. North had spent some time explaining the economic benefits of the FairTax, which are numerous and are just what this country needs to put all of us back to work.

Taxes are controlled by the American Constitution! Article one sections 2 & 9 say there are no direct taxes [taxes on persons, their labor or property without proportioning among the states. No capitation taxes.]. The many Supreme Court decisions have said the 16th Amendment did not change this or add new taxes. The income tax, put in place in 1862 by the Lincoln administration is an “INDIRECT EXCISE” tax that does not apply to persons. It is a tax on “PRIVILIGED ACTIVITIES connected to state & federal government and does not apply to most Americans. Read about this!

  • VTX1300R

I don’t understand where these Politicians and pundints get offthinking that even a 15% tax is a low tax. Thats insane. I go back too the old song by Jerry Reed, “If 10% good enough for Jesus, it should be good enough for Uncle Sam”. Trouble is not enough people in this world value the Bible as the authoritative word of God any more. 15% is too high period. End of story!

  • Bill in Dallas, TX

It seems to me that this Dr. Gary North is actually PROMOTING the FairTax! He does not think he is doing so because he obviously does not understand what the bill (HR25/S13) says. Might help him if he actually read it.

The only point in that FairTax that he appears to take exception with, as John Garver points out, is the Pre-bate. He thinks it only goes to the “poor.” Not so, it goes to everyone who has a social security number.

The Pre-bate would very likey be a tremendous boon to those whose incomes are well below the poverty level. But the main point is that no one would actually be paying the sales tax on the costs of necessities up to the poverty level. After that point, any spending above the poverty level would result in the same sales tax for everyone for every dollar they spent. All are equal. That, in essence is why it was named the FairTax. It treats all citizens equally.

  • http://www.bigsunday.com Randy Rose

He said the Fair Tax Act rebates only to the poor, he is mistaken. The prebates go to everybody.
